Location-Based Social Networking

Posted 03 May 2005 - 11:30 AM

Yet to be released: http://grocs.dmc.dc.umich.edu/~mates/

Quote

mates is a location-based social networking system in the form of a robust web service, or Relationship Engine, and an optional rich media client application, or Relationship Space Navigator.

Our objective in creating mates has been to build an open infrastructure to introduce and connect individuals based on the intersection of physical location and other properties they might have in common.

mates is different than the wide range of existing social networking and instant messaging applications. We strive to create an open infrastructure that will allow existing software to harness the power of location based social networking and a platform on top of which other new, powerful applications can be developed.

The current version of mates is geared towards the academic community, focusing on course registration and academic interests. This set of properties could easily be extended to encompass professional or social environments with hooks into LDAP directories or existing social networking applications.

I AM SORRY SIR, COULD YOU PLEASE INTERJECT YOUR FEELINGS ON WHY THIS SUBJECT MATTER IS APPROPRIATE AND WHY WE SHOULD ALL CARE ABOUT THIS UNRELEASED NETWORKING SOFTWARE.

I thought it was an interesting concept, it's like meeting people in a bar, or club, or gathering... but over the interweb... I wonder if it will work with my Treo... as the Treo goes with me all over, would be interesting to get an IM from someone saying "Hey, saw you just walked in to Hollister, I'm in the lingerie section in the green miniskirt"

*sighs* I can dream can't I?!

Gosh, I wish I had your week. My Legal Envirnoment of Business final is in the morning at 8 and it's cumulative. I have one in Statistics at 11. Then bright and early Saturday morning at 8:30 I have an Accounting II final. And then on Moday it starts again with Management and Marketing.

But once all that is over, I'm heading to Athens to UGA to go out with my girls. Two of my best friends turn 21 next week  If I can just make it till Tuesday.... :P
