Creating graphics/music for your game.

Posted 16 June 2009 - 07:53 PM

Well, the above is a little bit self explanitory. I was just wondering how many of you game programmers out ther actually make their own graphics/music/sfx? I'm working on creating graphics for my games now and I'm finding it is far HARDER than actually writing the game. Being an indy developer you have to where many hats or try and find somebody to help you with what you are not so good at. I just like doing it all myself and find it more satisfying.

I usually make my own graphics, they are never very good though. For sound effects I usually use the internet to find free sounds.

I do usually write my own music though :)

I find that using flash is a great help drawing sprites as you can use the onion skinning view to check it and also animate it from within flash. I always found that a great help.

I'll have to look into Flash someday. It sounds like a great tool.

Flash can be a bit of a pain to export from thats my only complaint, I might look into some script for exporting animation as a sprite sheet from flash, that would be excellent.

When I started XNA I used a lot of imported textures and sprites (as well as models and sounds). Now, I reduced the number of external resources and try to create my own (thanks to Blender, Photoshop and SOFTIMAGE | XSI).

Generally, I try to focus on the code and gameplay, therefore sometimes when you need a ready texture or sprite, I just go ahead and download it rather than drawing it in my own.

Sometimes though, when I have some free time, I can randomly draw different models or design textures and then use them whenever I need.

Spaking about sounds, well at this point I only use third-party sounds.

I draw my own things because I had to. Back when I was learning for the first time I didn't have my own internet. This means I couldn't download many resources or anything and had to make it by scratch.

Speaking about resources, I made a list of tools/resources for those who are using external resources for their projects.

I've been working at graphics, it isn't as fun as the coding but I really like it. I posted a few tools in the pinned thread Core started.

When it comes to sound, I have to look else where. :(
