Anyone know of a good place to find some free tilesets for an 8-bit RPG? I'll need some for the world view, as well as dungeons, towns, castles, ruins, deserts, forests, etc.

Try http://opengameart.org for starters. They have a good selection of resources though I'm not sure if you could consider them 8-bit or not.

Yea, I'm looking through their tilesets now. I see some promising stuff so far, but I'm still open to other suggestions as well.

You could try Reiner's as well. He has a bunch of tiles and some sprites as well.

You can look at the Chipsets entry at Charas as well.

Yea, I've used Charas for all of my character sprites so far just because I enjoy being able to create my own characters and they have an awesome quantity of things to choose from.

I've been scrounging the internet for some great articles and such on 3d game programming and have come across two really great resources that I would like to share.
The first is http://www.gamerendering.com/. I haven't read close to all of the information linked here, but I really enjoyed the papers and articles on vegetation.
The second is http://developer.nvi..._gems_home.html. I don't think I need to say anything about a programming book with the word 'Gems' in it to convince you to read it. The name and link should be enough.

I have some LoZ sprites. I think they're just Link and his items, but hey. If you want them, I'll upload them later.

UG Cyber, I recommend looking at macosxnerd101's tutorials on Math and Game Programming. I think they might help. As for collisons, I found the recent tutorial very helpful: http://www.dreaminco...-1d-collisions/
I also found this very helpful: http://www.essential...om/tutorial.htm

I've found a few more tools that I don't think are on the list yet, so here goes.
A good program for 8-bit sounds/music: My link, it has a bit of a learning curve, but is well worth it.
A good program for editing sprites: IcoFX, this is really good at getting pixel perfect images, it only saves in .ico but you can export to most other formats.

What about SlimDX? I am just getting started with it, but it looks promising.
