Hi Oracle ...

Photoshop - well - there are two ways here -

A)
*Create new image of desired size
*On the Channels tab - (hit icon looks like paper ~ create new channel
*Using the rectangle selection tool - select an area the size you want each square
*Select | Modify | Contract by 1 pixel
*Hit the Delete key
*Nudge the selection up and over left by one pixel (use the arrow keys to do this)
*Edit | Define Pattern
*Create a new channel
*Edit | Fill | instead of foreground color select Pattern
*Load the channel as a selection by hitting Select | Load Selection - press Enter
*Layers tab - create new layer
*Fill with a color or gradient
This is probably the best, most precise, most effective way

B)
OR alot of people do this:
*Open New
*View | Show | Grid (to adjust size of grid - can adjust under your preferences)
*Get to tracin' teh grid with the line tool :)

HTH

Hello again, folks - Reposting here cuz of the glitch yesterday ...

Initially, I mis-read what Oracle was wantin' to do - the instructs above are for the square grid (you know - boxes) ... Following is what I think he was really looking for ~ the lines across ~

*Open the image you want to have the effect on
*Open a new image 1 pixel wide by 4 pixels high
*Fill the top half of the image with black using the pencil tool.
*Click Select | All ~ then Edit | Define Pattern
*In your original image click on New Layer icon on the Layers tab.
*Edit | Fill ~ Pattern click OK
Normally, at this point I change the blend mode to overlay and adjust the opacity to about 55%.  Play around with the blend options and transparency - suit to your own taste.

You can also achieve this effect by selecting the desired area - Filter | Sketch | Halftone Pattern - Change pattern type to Line - Play around with the settings and adjust to taste

Hope This Helps :)
