Logging?

Posted 04 July 2009 - 03:32 PM

I just have a few questions about logging: what's it used for? How should it be used? And why do people use it?

Logging is important for a lot of reasons.

Here is an example: Let's say you have an application that has been running smoothly for months. Then all of a sudden it comes to a dead stop. You have no idea what happened, so where do you turn?

Can you guess? :)

Your logs! They can tell you all sorts of good information that can help you solve the problem.

There are also different ways in which you can use logs, and by that i mean you can catch different kinds of information in them.

Maybe try and do a Google search on the Importance of Log Files. I'm sure you will find loads of information.

Logging also shows progress on a task. It shows in a time period how much you have done and the technicality of the work. Also, if you were unable to do work, logging gives you an idea of what you were doing and how you were thinking back then.
