I'm currently a software engineer. It was my dream job when I was young, and now I want to be a doctor, so I'm going to medical school.

I think I posted in here somewhere before but I dont remember. I'm set on System and Network Security as a career and a dream job would be doing network security for the government like CIA, DHS, NSA; just something where I feel Im doing something important.

Here recently I've started getting back into coding a bit and have started a couple hardware engineering/development projects. One of which, NCR is looking at for kiosks, touchscreens, etc.

I have my dream job, independent game development. However, I'm also interested in getting into the hardware side of computers, more repair than development of new hardware.

I'd like to develop business applications for a big company like GE or something, while going home to a nice apartment in a big city like New York and doing some freelance web development on the side.

Everyone has a dream, so what's your passion? What would be your ideal working environment?

I had a dream job many years ago. We smoked cigars at our desk, had long expense account lunches with beers (notice plural of beer), during pretty much the whole month of December we drank peppermint shnaps or Jack Daniels to get in the holiday spirit, we came and went whenever we wanted to except the guys on the phones who had to be there for the customers. We used to buy fresh bean coffee and grind it and brew it in our offices. It was kind of like a gourmet software business ;)

We had a great boss, we had a crazy good team of some of the wierdest guys you'll ever meet where almost everybody was a genius in something and all the skills were complementary, and we put out an incredible product. It was huge and clean and had almost no problems. It just goes to show how much good the right people can do when they're treated like people instead of trained monkeys or pains in the ass.

We used to get system dumps in the original boxes of tractor-feed. It's been so long I can't even remember how many sheets (maybe 5000) or how much it weighed but we're talking about a hell of alot of paper. And we're talking big wide sheets, not 8 1/2 x 11. Anyway we had a room and it was filled with all the dumps the clients sent us. We would troubleshoot a dump, write a fix in object code, put the box back in the dump room and pull out another box. When we didn't have bugs to work on we wrote extensions to the product or helped out on development in other areas.

The job itself was in a great location, secluded but also close to good eats and liquor stores. We had a building much bigger than we needed so we all had plenty of space and quiet to work in and nobody bothered us. It was TCB all the way.

It went on like this for years until the company got sold. Damn good life if you ask me ;)

Oh, I think the guy who asked this question has an above-average understanding of management ;)

Well my two main interests in programming have always being artificial intelligence and GPS systems. Put the two together and you get UAV development! :P Ha I'm already looking into opensource software to control model airplanes, its small but its a start.

If I don't end up in that line of work i'm still happy just programming embedded systems and the likes. The whole hardware/software interactions and how they do it has always fascinated me.

I am a little late for this post because I was busy getting my dream job. I am working as a penetration tester. When I am finished hacking, I team up with the programmers to either fix existing code, add code or even start over. If this isn't my dream job, i would have to say writing security software, doing strictly coding.

I've got my dream jobs all planned out in chronological order:

1. programmer
2. director of engineering
3. CTO
4. senior commercial airlines pilot
5. astronaut
6. entrepreneur
7. angel investor
8. retired billionaire

Good plan right? :D
