I worked hard to get where I am now as an Application Developer. I have great benefits, work 8-5 with an hr lunch, no nights or weekends. The pay isn't the best, but I enjoy the people I work with, both other developers and upper management, and almost everyday I learn something new or a better way to program a feature.

My ultimate dream job is to do what I do now, write code, and be able to telecommute full-time. Travel the world at my leisure and make a living. If I want to bum around Europe for a few months, so be it. Mexico not working out after a week? Off to Australia! If I can afford a permanent place to always come back to here, and live comfortably wherever I may choose to wonder, then I am good to go ^^

My dream job would be a lead architect in the development of graphics hardware. Ideally, I would have been an architect of some of the earliest 3D graphics hardware, such as those that SGI or (slightly later) ArtX developed, since I would have loved to have been there from the start. Basically, I would have been born as Tim Van Hook if I could. That time has come and gone though, so more practically, I would love to work in the technical R&D department of a large company like ATI, Nvidea or Sony for example.

Secondly, I would like to work with the architects and engineers as a technical writer and/or software engineer to produce libraries, SDK's or documentation/patents for new computer systems (e.g. games consoles).

However, outside of (hopefully) earning a modest living, I am content with practicing my passions as a hobby. It may sound unambitious, but these fields (computer architecture) are very difficult to get in to, especially in modern times where large companies hold the monopoly and can afford to hire only the most highly experienced.

There are a few things id like to do

1) I'd like to code for specific hardware and make useful tools for every day living (such as making homes more efficient with energy and resources)
2) I want to make a program that automates certain farming tasks. I actually am going to do this after I graduate, and im being kind of vague, but the idea I have is going to be really cool once its completed.
3) I want to work on open source projects (namely KDE for linux and bsd) that help people. I want to bring commercial quality user friendliness to the open source realm

I want to be a game developer! I want to be in charge of the art department, gameplay department, sound department and story department. It would be awesome. And probably not gonna happen. The perfect dream job. ^^

I can't really see myself getting a better job than I have at the moment at the BBC, unless Google wants to hire me. Some of the benefits:

* Console games breakout area, with TVs and Halo being played every lunchtime
* Great pay
* Casual dress code
* 10% innovation time, ie: 20 days per year bookable time to work on your own software projects
* Secondments possible in content divisions, ie: you can work as a producer on TV programmes
* Working with engineers with a sense of humour and good social skills (this is rare!)
* 25 days holiday, not including bank holidays
* The work itself - working on software projects that end up on TV
* Free masters course that I'm working towards
* You get sent on courses run by professional trainers in the languages you are using
* Department-wide 'Hackdays' run and sponsored by the BBC, ie: music hackday
* The engineers you are working with are smart, and happy to help
* Low stress, because it's not the private sector
* Flexitime
