Banner Attempt :)

Posted 16 July 2009 - 08:53 PM

Hey,

So I was thinking of making a forum and failed 2 times with forum's purpose . After reading BetaWar's advice I came up with a graphics design/web development forum (similar to the section at DIC). To get things started, I needed a banner (1000x170) and came up with this:

Its meant to read gdart.forumotion.net. Is it legible? Any feedback would be appreciated :) Be brutal or nice. :P

Thanks.

Here's another attempt:

It didn't really turn out like I expected but it does look effective.

Thanks. Oh I see what you mean about the first one. Now it all depends on how it looks on the site :)

I like the first one more, it uses the gradient to add depth. It is also easeir to read the text on and works nicely with the reflection.

I agree, the first one is better, but there is some empty space on the sides. Could you make it a bit...skinnier?

Or maybe add something to it...it's a little bit bland as it is. Not that it isn't nice, just...you know. I like the reflection.

Have you ever heard of a program called reflet? You can make animated reflections...not that you'd want to in this case, but since you like doing animations and this program is free and stand-alone, I thought I'd mention it. :)

You can find a link to Reflet in this tutorial, which I am only including because it's done in UGA5. I did NOT write this tutorial!

But here is something I did do with Reflet:

 You will have to click the pic to see the effect.

It looks pretty good. But I suggest looking into reflections in general. Take a mirror (if you have some metal that would be preferred, because a mirror will give you a longer reflection of each item) and lay it flat down on the table. Then take a book and stand it up vertically on the mirror. then take a pencil or something low in height and lay it down on the mirror. Anyways, notice how they have the same strength of reflection. From an art scale this is not so of your banner (at least in appearance), not to be too picky or anything.

You should use the EXACT same settings for each layer. And if they are understand that the one on the right at first glance looks stronger so you may want to tweak it back. In art it may be exact, and sometimes you have to tweak it AWAY from reality to make it FEEL right.

So, in essence you want it somewhere in the middle of my above 2 paragraphs. So I would lower the opacity of the reflection of the .forumotion.

Sorry for the long post - thought it should be said.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I see where you are trying to get to with the layers.

However, I scrapped this quite some time ago. Nevertheless, the comments will be used to make another one. :)

The composition is alright. The text and reflection too. I do find that the grey is a bit bland though.
