A little Background on this laptop

It was manufactured by gateway way back in 1993

and before this monster build it was relegated to Holding up the end of a copy machiene that was wobbly in Our Atlanta Branch Who knows how long it was functioning as a copier leg.

But upon boot it promptly produced the windows 3.1 logo on that amazing(that it still works) grey scale LCD

And as another bonus for our contestants is that this thing still holds a charge. after 10 years the battery is still good.

OHHH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!

DAY 2

Vermillion is experiencing a bit of a issue with the "Bad Bad Nomad".

It seems that most Linux distro's want at least 8MB of system ram to install to the harddisk. But the Nomad only has 4 adding more memory is not an option as you couldent find it if you wanted to. (And we dont, it wouldent be THE CHALLANGE if everything was handed to em)

I sat down with him and and breiflytalked stratagy on how he plans to address the memory problem.

Thorian.... So WTF is up with the build it looks like you are at a linux command prompt?

Vermillion... Yep but it is only a command prompt for mulinux that runs in a ramdrive.

Thorian..... But THE CHALLANGE was to have linux installed to the HDD?

Vermillion.... I know this. however I am going to use muLinux to create a swap partition. With that partition I may just be able to overcome the limited amount of ram this POS has. If this works as expected I should be ok to install debian.

Thorian..... You seem pretty confident that you will be able to pull this off.

Vermillion..... I dont know, I have my doubts, but that is part of the challange.

Well there ya have it one little obstical on the path to glory they are down but they are not out yet.

Checking in with sweetgrinner

Thorian.....What do you think the biggest limiting factor will be on this build?

Sweetgrinner....Well if Vermillion cannot get past the 4 MB memory barrier I will not be able to provide connectivity.

Thorian...... Suppose that he is able to get this thing loaded how do you plan on attaching to the Net

Sweetgrinner..... with the lack of any viable way to connect a NIC to the nomad. we will either have to use a null modem cable connected to another PC functioning as a proxy. Or to actually make it stand alone we can always just hook up a 56k external modem. However that would be too easy.

[14:08] Vermillion: Well, muLinux does not appear to function on that laptop, so my strategy took a bit of a hit.
[14:58] thorian: Your down, but are you out?
[14:59] Vermillion: Hell no. I just set up some partitions using smallLinux, I'm not quite beaten yet.
[15:02] Vermillion: Dammit, smallLinux doesn't support mkswap. :P
[15:03] thorian: You sound like your getting frustrated
[15:03] thorian: What about knoppix?
[15:03] thorian: Like a command line only distro?
[15:09] Vermillion: Knoppix is way too big - any distro worth a shit requires at least 8MB of RAM to install. If you don't have it, they just freeze up when creating the ramdisk.
[15:21] Vermillion: Haha, I tried booting with the smallLinux boot dixk, and then swapping in the muLinux root disk, and now I have a command prompt like this:
[15:21] Vermillion: eh?>
[15:21] thorian: Is it canadian
[15:21] Vermillion: Canadian and confused. :)
[15:22] Vermillion: I think it called me a hoser, too, it scrolled by fast. :P

[16:21] Vermillion: Looks like Minux shot craps on this baby too. This one says "Giving up."
[16:26] thorian: You officially throwing in the towl or are you wanting the DOS
[16:26] thorian: ?
[16:26] Vermillion: Oh, I'm not done yet, I'm just keeping you updated. :)

It looks like the laptop is giving up but not the build team.
