Game Planning

Posted 27 July 2009 - 12:31 PM

Currently I have created an infamous MMO-RPG game. I have coded a text only version of the game to help me balance my factions. Before I start coding a GUI (planning on using slick) Right now I have ubuntu installed on my server and I am planning on setting up MySQL. I have started development of my protocals between my client server. My plan is to use OOP in such a way I can create new "game pieces" on the fly just using MySQL to input the data and calling a function from my server side. My server really is an old machine I bought for 20$ off my school it's a PIII/800

My experience: I have been programming for years, but officially for about 2 years. I am doing this as a side project of my own so that I may work my way some day into the game industry by knowing quite a bit about it. I've done quite a bit of research and work just to get to where I am.

I want to get my server set up and I am looking for some suggestions, and ideas. Is there a better API than Slick for the GUI? (i'm not going to start on my GUI until I get my server working) Should I use MySQL or is there a better free equivalent? Should I use a different operating system? I want to make sure I understand protocals as well. From everything I've read and researched it's just a symbol system you make to send data from client to server and back again. You need a start and stop symbol so you know when to start and stop reading them... (is this correct? or am I missing something?)

It's not that I am ignorant and couldn't figure things out, it's I want advice and help in gray areas. Any advice would be appreciated.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

For gui, it depends how your want to do it. If you just want to program it yourself, any ide will problably do. If you want a drop and drag editor (not a good suggestion), use somthing like netbeans. This is for an internet game right? Why run it through your own server? There are many virtual servers you could use. If you can wait a little longer, I believe sun are going to release a games server which will be able to handle online multiplayer games.

As for the IDE I'm using Eclipse SLICK is a 2D game API. I'm using my own server so I can test it at home and learn how to create my own server in general. By all means this whole project is not looking for the "easy way out" but rather an experiance to learn from every step of the way. As far as there being virtual servers, I didn't know people provided that as a service, is it free? I'm very interested in the new sun game server I'll check it out thanks!

Your server does not really need a GUI on a PIII it's a good idea
As far as the DB is concerned, if all your cooperative process are written in Java I would use HSQLdb rather than MySQL it has a smaller foot print and you can easily store Java objects into it so you can move your objects from client to server back and forth/

Lol. Yea, I don't think that game is infamous, because it's not well known for being bad, scandalous, or controversial.

Actually it is well known for being bad, just depends on scope. My friends and college have known about the project since the beginning. It is improving but development has been slow because of time constraints. Sorry to resurrect this posting but I just logged on for the first time again in a while. I also want to say thanks to everyone who responded. It was helpful.

Please ZoneOUT do not necropost a more than 2 years old thread.
If you didn't find the answer to your question here, open a new post.
Usually a 3 months old thread here is considered as closed.
