The compiled jar should run on any computer with the JRE Runtime. There are third party utilities that can do this though, Google jar to exe.

and the .jar works on both Unix and Windows and VMS when the .exe only works on Windows

I actually asked the exact same question earlier, somewhere else, using the c++ exe as an example :D

I have never actually made a jar from a project, never really had the need to package anything (until now). So a jar can be run on any computer, without the need to run it through an ide or command line, and it will contain any external libraries and resources that i use? If jars can be run like this, I would imagine that they would need a jvm or jre on the computer. Do most computers automatically come with these or do they have to be manually installed?

Reason I ask is....say i produced a piece of software for a company. They just want to double click on the icon on the desktop and have the program run. How is somthing like this produced?

P.s sorry for somewhat hijacking the post, just thought this is relevant to the topic.

Double click on the .jar and the application will start
