I was thinking about trying out www.000webhost.com for free domain hosting for my girlfriend's website. I have never registered a domain name before and at a different place I procured hosting. I have used GoDaddy recently, and I know they charge for transfers.

Can someone give me a quick rundown of how to register the domain and get it on 000webhost.com ? Also, the cheapest registration site would be helpful. Isn't there a hub site called nican or something that takes care of domain registration?

"nican" you mean ICANN? You don't really register through them.

General outline for getting a domain and hosting:

Go to 1and1.com or godaddy.
Register for only the domain name and pay your yearly fee of nine bucks.
Go to host of choice.
Sign up for a service.
Read the information they give you.
Go to your domain provider's control panel (1and1 or godaddy).
Input the specific information they ask for (provided to you by your host)
Wait a day or two as things get switched over.
Throw a party.
