The top navigation is cut off from my screen. (FF 3.0.13)
I would change the color scheme, it just isn't working for me.
As far as the idea, there could be some potential there, you might want to create a portal page, or somewhat of a control panel type page instead of taking me right to the forums.
You should focus on answering these simple questions for starters.
1. Why should I join this forum?
2. What is the purpose of this forum? (you know, but does the average user?)
3. How will I benefit from using this forum?
4. Who is your target audience. I see forums all the way down to elementary school up until college. Do you want to market to all of these demographics? I have a 9 yr old and a 15 yr old who share different interests, how can you appease both age groups and keep it kid friendly?

It cuts it off in Firefox 3.5.2 as well.
