OFFICIAL: Hurricane Katrina Thread

Posted 28 August 2005 - 11:13 AM

Category 5, 175 MPH, headed for New Orleans.

This is gonna be a nasty one, and while I'm not a religous person... god bless the people in that part of the country.

I was in New Orleans last year, amazing city. Lot of history and architecture that's gonna be lost it appears. A shame really.

They are putting the 100,000+ people who are stranded in The Big Easy without cars in the Superdome.

If you had to leave your house in a hurry, with a couple backpacks or suitcases, what would you take?

Considering most of New Orleans is under sea level. They are el screwedo. I really hope the hurricane miraculously dies down before it hits them directly.

My dog, some dough, dry food, liquid, some clothes and my bicycle if the situation permits.

EDIT: I cannot believe I was so STUPID to leave out a box of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

Laptop, blackberry, phone, credit cards, cash, my tilley hat, a bottle of whiskey, a shirt that makes me look good, and a towel. Hell, I carry most of that with me when I go anywhere.

I was in Jamaica when Emily pased by the island...wierd weather alright...all the best to those affected by this one.

I would take my cell phone, some clean underwear, a knife, trash bags (you can do a lot with a trash bag), my laptop, my desktop (for the business records and porn), my birth certificate and passport, all the alcohol I can fit in my bags.

Can't forget the porn when abandoning the securities of your own home, good thinking!

i'd grab my file organizer (pretty small and compact but it holds everything ie - medical records, marraige certificate, school records, birth records, banking info, army documents, etc)
cell-phone (phone charger's in my car), i wouldn't need clothes since i carry a couple changes in my car, i've got my equipment in my trunk so that's taken care of, i'd grab my knives, my dog & cats (2), and my uniforms if i could (they all fit in a back-pack/assault pack -- i've tried & succeeded).

i'm set for emergencies most of the time. everything i would absolutely need is in my car -- 100's of feet of 550cord, e-tool, knive & sharpener, lighters, matches, tent/hooch & tarp & stakes, laptop w/ Falcon View software for Raven UAV crap, and even a couple MREs :( which i'm actually not proud of

i would rather get punched in the face, twice, than go through a hurricane.

but i would definatlely bring my desktop and laptop, and my car. fuck clothes, more chances to be naked in a superdome full of homeless women.

i would also bring a bat. because i have no doubt some homeless guy will try to steal my cup noodles, and when he does, god help him.

i would bring a shank, and stab anyone who looks like they have money, and if they didn't have money, i would stab them again as punishment.

if some form of security came after me, i would point to the guy next to me, because we are in the middle of the fucking super dome.

i would bring sloth, or a picture of sloth. i figure that has to count somewhere for a discount; homeless and a mexican side kick. and not only that, but sloth grew up on the streets so he knows all about shanking, which i will need to become very proffecient in. that's how he rolls.

lastly i would bring a hitler mustache so i could brainwash the entire superdome with my nazi propaganda. after successfuly brainwasing the entire population, we would fight the hurricane with a wall of humans all the while screaming "MEAT SHIELD." those who refuse to take part in the human wall, or fall off of the human wall, will be hit in the face with a bat, and burned in the streets.

Well Being a member of the Community Emergency Responce Team. and Former EMT

This is in my car at the moment

I have my medic bag (comprehensive first aid kit)

Turn out bag
4 in 1 tool (gas wrench , water wrench , prybar, hook
Gerber multi tool (knife plyers etc)
3 days of MRE's
water purification tablets ( enough for 30 quarts )
2 canteens ( 1 quart each )
Copys of all important papers DL marrage cirtificate etc
AM FM Shortwave radio grundig (4 way power solar crank DC batteries)
LED flashlight spare batteries
Regular D cell flashlight spare batteries
Glass punch
small first aid kit
Safety glasses
Neon Green Vest
Hardhat
Dust mask
Poncho
Change of clothes (full)
spare change sox and brief's
roll of ductape
roll masking tape
50 ft of paracord
2 Bic lighters

and a red wool blanket

The only things I would grab from the house would be my Little firebox from the safe

small amount of pety cash and change ( rolled quarters nickles dimes ) For phones
A cz 52 handgun / holster
200 rounds of shells
and my ATF Log book ( C&R FFL Holder to prove what was in the collection provided my house gets hit by looters so I can fill out the loss stolen report)
Origional documents

and the 12 gauge (small home defence type) and my ammo box of well ammo ( more pistol bulllets and assorted 12 gauge shells/slugs) things can get nasty when everyone around you thinks you are better off.

toss the animals and their food in the wifes minivan and if there is more time Pull the seats out of the van toss in my butane stove and all the bottled water/ non perishable food in the house & my dutch oven.
sleeping bags pillows and durable clothes a bucket trashbags and my tool box

A shelter wont allow the animals but a van would make a good temporary shelter the dogs can be tied up to it and would provide an alert in the event of someone messing with us.

and you wonder why I included a Shotgun and my Pistol

Reports of the roof at the superdome leaking are coming in just now. Water is said to be pouring in from the roof of the superdome where more than 10,000 people are riding out the storm. Experts are unsure if the superdome can withstand the hurricane force winds from Katrina. It might not be the winds they need to worry about.
