Hey all,

So Since google's OS will be released and it's completely browser/cloud based, this brings up the question. In the future, will there only be web development? Of course there will still be low level OS development to actually build the OS's, but I'm talking about application and desktop development. Will the future only be with the web?

I honestly don't think this will ever become as mainstream as Windows/Linux/Mac

However I do think Web Development will own the largest market share in the future of development. - integrated with Mobile development of course.

Edit - as for the dominant OS on netbooks - this would be the right choice and AFAIK that seems to be the target market.

How about an Earth metaphor?

We have clouds, but the clouds are always over something. Thus, we will always have some base to write "traditional" code for, as opposed to everything becoming web development.

Also like Jenga:

You can't take out all the base "bricks" without the whole thing toppling over.

True that, but I'm more talking about application development in the future... There will definitely always be low level programming in other languages.

As mentioned, there will always be that foundation that will keep the web services running. Web development in it's actual context is not going to be the same web development in 10 years. The developers of client applications will look more into cloud technologies, therefore they will port and use several of the same application building principles there. This will be the next step in app development, and since it is web-oriented, this somehow probably can touch the web development domain. Plus, I don't think that the future will be completely in the web. People always want something of their own, something they know they can access no matter what. Therefore, here are the client apps. However, client apps might use more web services, and that is an important point.

One of the things users always want is games, and at this moment you cannot offer a major game product via cloud services and web environments. And this will be in this box for quite a while - it is irrational to always download 4GB of game content (unless there will be extra-high-speed Internet channels, which probably is not going to happen that soon). Game development industry will be on the client side for quite a while.

The actual web development as in web site building will probably always exist, since web sites are used everywhere.

web development has little place to go but up. Desktop application can often be replaced by web applications, and the web is such a powerful tool that offers so many dynamic things that can't be found elsewhere. I'm waiting for newspapers to slowyly die

?? May I ask for a more detailed definition of "web environments"? I'm totally sure I understand this comment.

Actually.. Steam does that.

UNLESS you're talking about a system where the games are played on a server somewhere, reducing network latency and not having any game data on your system - Yeah, that's been done too
