Posted 18 September 2005 - 06:41 AM

Hi All!

My name is Garrik, Im a Heathen webmaster that currently oversees 150 websites. Ive been a webmaster for about 6 years. I was a graphic artist but made the trasition to the web just about the time the bubble burst. Im looking to go back to school to enhance my skills portfolio and I seriously want expand my programing knowledgebase. Any recommendations to stay competetive in the dwindling IT economy? I joined this site site because Im hoping to find some help with a javascript question that has been vexing me, any help would be really appreciated. Im 35, recently married and looking forward to becoming part of this community.

Well, welcome to dream in code! Glad you decided to join. As for staying competitive, the same rule applies to the IT industry as any other...knowledge and diversification...the more you know, the more valuable you are. I don't necessarily agree that the IT industry is dwindling (the bubble burst because there were too many companies producing too few quality products/services, and too much duplication), but as someone who has been in the industry for about 12 years, I definitely feel that having a broad skill set can ensure your value.

Good to have you and being a webmaster of over 150 websites is a damn fine piece to put on a resume :P. I'll probably be begging you for some help on the one I'm in the middle of creating. The compilation of ingenuity from the folks on this site is unfathomable in relation to other sites I've checked out before. See you on the forum.

Thanks all for the warm welcome, dont let the 150 sites sound too impressive most of them are template sites that I inherited, it means alot of spinning plates in the air but mostly they are on cruise control. Of course I do have to take care of my reps and I only build non template sites for those clients that whine alot to shut them up. Ive been doing this for about 6 years, worked for two internet startups that went bust, I even had a brief stint in the adult industry. I know Im not going to get rich building sites but I still enjoy it and how many people can say they enjoy thier jobs. Thorian was the one who told me to check this place out and I must say it was well worth the trip. Amedeus your links got me back on the right track and I can see light at the end of the tunnel thanks.

Garrik

welcome, I have been mostly hardware and networking for eight years, but just started multimedia on webpages. Nothing fancy, but I can pound out an HTML / Javascript page or two.
