CDC Considering Making Circumcisions Mandatory

Posted 31 August 2009 - 09:08 AM

Quote

The Centers for Disease Control are currently considering making routine circumcision mandatory for baby boys born in the United States. Circumcision is considered a method of reducing the spread of the HIV virus. http://lansing.injur...googleid=269958

We haven't had a good quality discussion about circumcision in a while, so what the hell. Discuss.

What? I thought it was already mandatory in the United States?

After reading, I guess not. The line of thought is that it is "beneficial" for health reasons, hence the high number of non-religious circumcisions in the U.S.

edit: How can someone miss something they never had? :/

The sign in the McDonald's restroom would read: "All male employees must wash their dicks before returning to work."

HIV is a virus, not a bacteria. Antibacterial agents don't have any affect.

As far as the circumcisions, it sounds rather fishy to me. It says that there were lower rates of HIV infection among circumcised men in Africa, but without any details (just how many were circumcised and were not, and what were the geographic considerations, how much more sexually active were uncircumcised men, if more). Even more pressing, the lack of understanding as to WHY it helps. Unless someone comes up with some decent theories, we could be forcing baby males to undergo needless surgery for no real benefit at all.

edit: More details to know: how many of the HIV infections were linked directly to sexual intercourse. And as well, the differing lifestyles between those who lived in communities where circumcision was usual versus those where it wasn't: do those communities have lowered instances of drug use, casual sex, etc.?

Of course, there are some benefits, but I'm speaking more on the subject of HIV. And you know, this kind of ties in to the forced vaccinations thread...

Yes, but that sign would be posted in the ladies room.

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought it said, "DIC Considering Making Circumcisions Mandatory." Now there's something to discuss! :P

Same. Also, I thought it was a hygene thing in general, not just for HIV. Hmmm....
