Programmer vs Informatics Engineer

Posted 05 September 2009 - 11:31 AM

Hi guys!

My questions are:

* how do you define a programmer?
* how do you define an informatics engineer?
* what are the differences between them?

Please everyone answer me, even if you share your point of view with other answers, since I'm collecting opinions.. that would be very important to me!

Best regards,

/Zubr

Informatics engineering is pretty much another way of saying Electronic and computer engineering. These types of engineers do a bit of software development but they also do things like microprocessor development, networking, circuit design and even super computer design.

A programmer is one who specializes in software development and software system design. They typically have limited knowledge of things like how to create a circuit board or how to build a microprocessor. They specialize in writing code, code theory, best practices and how to create the best software possible.

So the difference is that the informatics engineer has a bit more knowledge of the electronics side than the programmer and the programmer knows more about the actual development and theory behind software design.

I love answering this question. I've done it on the Yahoo forum and I don't mind doing it again and again. Okay, firstly, to everyone else out there, informatics engineering is defined here:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informatics_engineering

A programmer is somebody who knows a high-level programming language, most of whom start out with C or C++ or Java. Some people assume that only people with Computer Science degrees can be programmers, but there are many out there who simply know these technical languages and can manipulate them to develop software programs.

After discovering what an informatics engineer MEANS, I can deduce that what the question really meant is, what a computer engineer is. Throughout the world, PC/computer engineers are simply electrical engineers with specialisation in Information systems. But now consider how vast the world of computers is, and you'll realise that this degree has it's own special requirements. In most countries, this is how a computer engineer would be defined, a person with a major in Information systems engineering(ie. electrical with that specialsation) and a minor in Computer science.

The differences between them are quite a few. Firstly, from experience, I can factually say that whatever a computer programmer can do, a computer engineer can do as well. PC engineers have a minor in Computer Science, so they can program as well. PC engineers are just what they sound like, they understand all aspects of the PC world, from hardware to software, modems, routers, networks, etc etc. If you're stuck between choosing the 2, simply ask yourself whether you want to be a software developer or do you want to have an open environment in being part of the PC world, as PC engineers are simply the "jack of all trades" when it comes to information systems.

more accurately, PC engineer defined: http://en.wikipedia....mputer_engineer

Ref: Computer Programmer versus Healthcare Informatics

I need some opinions on the above topic.
I am a nurse and have decided to go back to school and am torn between computer programmer or informatics. Can anyone tell me the difference between the two? I enjoy things such as building databases, collecting data, analyzing it, solving IT solutions, and creating documents from these reports. I enjoy getting behind the scenes of the computer and want to learn how to build software as well as help to trouble shoot. So my question also would be where does that fit - computer programmer or informatics.

Thanks,
Yis
