What to program?

Posted 17 September 2009 - 01:30 PM

Well lately I haven't been practicing C++ much and basically the only thing I've done for the past two weeks is look over the topics here at Dream.In.Code (so I don't get too rusty)

I know there is another topic somewhere listing a lot of little projects people can do but those are more "learning" activities then actual programming projects that you can do something with (waste a couple minutes using it after completion)

What I want to do is a simple game in the command window because graphics just over complicates things
I tried to do a tic-tac-toe with SDL and I only finished the main menu haha (it was a sweet main menu though)
The Menu

I was thinking something like poker or battleship or maybe...(your input)
yea any ideas?
not too hard like a chess game with AI
but not too easy like a number guessing game

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Yep, thats the one I was talking about
I guess what I meant is that there are no simple games on the list

I decided to do a tic-tac-toe with AI

besides figuring out a way the AI is going to work I don't know how I'm going to store the information it gathers
only thing I can think of is a txt file but I'm not the best at sorting the information in code/ have never done it

make solitare, not the card game.
look at the game on this site
http://gwydir.demon....e/solitaire.htm
and make it for the console, it's really not very complicated and should be a brease, but it's a fun game to play, much better than tic tac toe, which if coded well is unbeatable, you'll get hours of fun playing it and the site i've mentioned offers a few different boards so you can modify your code to allow for the different boards.
i understand it's not really hard and i'm not sure if it's the sort of practice your looking for but again it's better than
tic tac toe??

Create a battle ship game over the server using a socket so you can play eachother, thats a good one.

You could make a chess game. Then program AI for it.

Edit: Nevermind, You explicitly said not a chess game w/ ai.

It wouldn't be hard to program. The hard part would be designing an algorithm for the AI.

You could do Ascii Invader, asciicker(tekken in ascii pronounced ass kicker), you can do a MUD then work on a telnet server back end for it.

Ascii Games are awesome- I haven't done one in years though.

For an ascii game like Invader
how do you make it able to take user input without pressing enter in the command prompt?

You could use getch() from conio.h.
