C++ IDE

Posted 19 September 2009 - 06:53 AM

Hi,

Can somebody advice me on what IDE to use for C++.

Well I'm looking for the basic like
syntax highlighting
intellisense
support for various compilers
debugger
code collapse

I'm not planning (yet) to develop with the .NET so lets leave the Visual Studio 2005 and above out.

I have tried code blocks and I can't debug.
I have tried netbeans but it is not so much friendly.
I have tried to install Visual Studio 6 on Vista but I had a hard time.

If anybody can give me insights to a good IDE, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much. :D

I tried codeblocks but I don't know how to debug. the Program was compiled in debug mode and yet it does not break on the breakpoints I set.

Devcpp is great but yeah, no intellisense.

thanks snowflakes & poncho4all! :^:

Is there any other suggestions?

VC++ can't be installed on vista.. :(

I only tried version 6 because I don't plan to program .NET apps.

I would recommend changing OS but there are ways around the vista problems you will find the some erros with Code::Blocks i belive.

You could check here: http://www.itwriting...6-on-vista.html

Good Luck i belive that you can find help for IDE's on vista here and for almost all problems with vista xD

The ultimate answer to this question:

Windows -> Visual Studio (snag an express edition)
Linux-> Code::Blocks

I've installed the latest Visual C++ several times with no problems at all on Vista. Also you're not stuck with .NET just because you use the latest VC++. You can easily develop applications not using .NET.

Install windows 7. There is a xp mode feature that allows applications that are incompatible with windows 7 to run.

Although i haven't tried running VC++ 6 in xp mode i assume it should work.

Visual Studio 2008 Express is a free option (read the terms of use) and it works on Vista.

DevC++(DevCpp) is a IDE you should avoid it's out-of-date and no longer maintained.

Code::Block is a great IDE as well.
