Force a redirect from a website, to my file.

Post icon  Posted 20 October 2009 - 03:03 PM

Hey guys :D

How do I block a website, but redirect to a html document that I've made? (on my computer, not online ...) ... ?

What i meen is :

Say my dad takes my computer, and he goes on 'www.example.com', how do i force a redirect to a file on my computer, without owning example.com?

So, just to make it clear : Someone types 'http://www.example.com' into FireFox, but the page redirects to "C:\Path\to\html\file\ExampleReplacement.html" on my computer (This "trick" will only be used on my computer.)

I have tried looking for Add-on's, googled "How to force a redirect", but I cant seem to find what im looking for.

I am using FireFox 3.7...

Is it possible?

Many thanks :)

Sorry if it's unclear, just tell me and i'll elaborate.

:P Nope :D ... I wasn't smart enough to think of that :P.

To be fair, you wouldn't "log on to your bank account" on a lappy carried around by a 15 year old kid saying "Check your bank account here" would you :P. and if you did, you deserve every thing you get ...

I was going to make websites i hate redirect to "404 Error" page that i made, to make it seem to a "not-so-in-the-tech-know-how" that that webby is down.

:)
I don't support phishing, and even if i did, what/how would i phish? it's only on my computer ... so i can't send it through emails can i :)?

So, is it possable?

bammy :D

Hosts file wouldn't point to a specific file.

You'd need to setup a local webserver... *then* you could use your hosts file to redirect to it.

Look into XAMPP.

Im not sure i've been understood ...

What i'm wanting to do is ... say :

On my computer (laptop) only ... When a user types "http://www.dreamincode.net" (for example) it redirects them to a file on my computer, not on a server, just this one computer.

localhost is just a DNS name pointing to your system, so yes.

XAMPP is pretty much download and run, you got your server running.

Just put your file in the htdocs folder, named index.html, and anything pointing to 127.0.0.1 (which you do via your hostname) will show that file.

Actually a good idea if used right. SpybotSD uses that same concept to protect against known bad untrustworthy site.
