Ubuntu 9.10 is be praised as possibly one of the best Linux Distro's to date.

I regularly podcast 'The Computer Action Show' formerly known as "The Linux Action Show".

One of the co-hosts Bryan Lunduke wrote a nice review about Ubuntu 9.10 and it really has me second guessing whether or not I want to wait for 10.04 LTS.

Some of the new features include:

The Ubuntu Software Center - Which is a combination of Synaptic and an Ubuntu specific software store.

This will give developers the opportunity to sell their own commercial software similar to the android marketplace, and to allow users to easily find and purchase software for their platform without much hassle.

Themes and Icons have been improved. Still orange and brown - but a lot crisper. Also they are including more desktop backgrounds.

Pidgin is finally gone in lieu of empathy.

Built in Ubuntu One - a service that offers file storage and synchronization between different Ubuntu powered computers will be shipping by default.

Now with all that being said - Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will allow you the ability to install the Gnome 3.0 desktop instead of being stuck with 2.8

Some of the other features not covered in the above article are:
Integration with cloud computing and netbooks.
Firefox 3.5.3 installed by default.
Terminal server client & remote desktop viewer.
Computer Janitor - to help you find and remove software packages you might not need anymore.

Canonical is making great improvements to easing new users into the ways of Linux.

Who all here is looking forward to this, or are you planning on waiting for 10.04 LTS?

Although I'll probably wait until 10.04 to install either since I'm still having fun playing around with 09.04.

I'm at 8.04 LTS, with the intent of waiting for the next LTS. However, there are a few toys I want that back porting has proved more annoying than it's worth.

I'm seriously considering moving to this one. As with Windows 7, I'm still going to give it month, though for different reasons.

Ubuntu releases are like pre announced apt-get DDoS attacks. The first few days can be manic. After a week it gets better. Then a flurry of updates. Then it's good to go.

I usually wait as well. The reason I want to wait for 10.04 mainly is because of the ability to just update and not install fresh.

How do you guys feel about the Ubuntu Software Center?

w00t! It was a giant hassle (at least for me) to get FF 3.5.3 installed in 9.04. Still isn't configured correctly

I took a look over the new features a while back, and I'm actually looking forward to this release.

I normally hate Ubuntu due to it's dumbing down of shit, but this could be promising! Haven't tried the beta yet, might have to stick it on my laptop over Mandriva for a while

Any of you tried the beta?

I really don't want to respond to this, but I've always been a firm believer of Gentoo's way of doing things when it comes to Linux - Where almost everything has to be done on your own (or at least, it used to be like that). When I'm using Linux for particular reasons I just like more control over what I'm doing, otherwise I'd happily use Windows

I think there's a healthy balance between everything handled for you versus doing everything by yourself one terminal command at a time.

I'm prepared to defend my statements, but I'd rather not due to exactly what's happening here - Going off topic.

So back on topic with my original question... Anyone tried the beta yet?? More specifically is it okay to run in production at it's present stage?

I heard a few minor complaints of a freeze up on Alpha release 4.

Other than that, I have heard of no complaints. If you wait a short bit after the release I would say it is safe for production value. Like Baavgai said earlier, the first few days are manic.

The only thing stopping me from playing with the beta - & the fact I don't have the extra machine for this at the moment is that I will not be able to Upgrade to 10.04 I am heavily debating whether or not to just back up my data and say screw it to hop on the 9.10 train.

For the most part, what I read about Karmic is nothing but good things. Of course there is room for improvement as with any operating system - but for Ubuntu's sake this is their best release to date.

I'm actually «glad» to hear this as I still haven't be able to install it properly... And quite frankly have given up. Keeps crashing on me.

I just hope they do something for Intel graphics drivers, 9.04 constantly changes the light setting.
