They patented a specific Gui ignoring the fact that a Gui is art not an invention(first facepalm)... this does not effect sudo su or even gksudo(second facepalm). I think facepalm covers how I feel pretty well.

I like that response and sums up my feelings on this to an extent.

I am not sure how this could hold, I mean it is something that has been around forever. The UAC is a mere GUI to the sudo command and they get a patent for it?

Wow I have to use this quote twice today.

You can read the patent here

Although certain I do not need to pint this out, the patent is not for the sudo command, nor anything of the like. This is a defensive patent related to the Windows UAC already implemented in Vista and 7. While the underlying theory is similar to the sudo command, it is the overall UAC process that is the subject of the patent. sudo does not do the patentable items the UAC does - this patent means nothing for the sudo command or it;s many users :)

Uhh, the better article to read (to understand the full horror of the situation) is this one.

Here's a quick quote:

Quote

And how do you like the final wording of the patent?:

Although the invention has been described in language specific to structural features and/or methodological steps, it is to be understood that the invention defined in the appended claims is not necessarily limited to the specific features or steps described. Rather, the specific features and steps are disclosed as preferred forms of implementing the claimed invention.

Which means, it's not just the GUI that's being patented. The GUI really doesn't even matter. They just gave a "preferred form of implementing" it, and enclosed every other possible form of their so-called "invention". This patent includes the "underlying theory" of the UAC, which, as you said Amadeus, is basically sudo. Guess what Microsoft will claim minutes after their patent is registered?
