Hey guys,
so I decided to try and install Ubuntu 9.10 on my Windows 7 machine today and neither of them would boot. I googled my problem and found that I
wasnt alone. I dont really feel like messing around too much.. I just need to get Linux installed asap so I can start on some homework...
Does anyone know of any distros that play nice with Windows 7? I dont really care which... I just need something thats easy to install and not going
to give me a headache. Thanks!

I have had no problems using Windows 7 with Fedora.
I'm still using the RC, but one of my friends also has had no problems installing Fedora and he is using the retail version.

Any version of linux ought to be able to daul boot with windows 7, espescially if you install the boot loader right. or maintain the windows one.

If you don't feel like messing around too much then you should try a virtual machine, like Sun's VmWare or their free on called VirtualBox, or you can use Microsoft's Virtual PC, it's also free. They allow you to do whatever you would be able to do anything with any OS as if it where on another computer. All it does is run on your PC...or linux machine

You could also use a live distro on a disk or thumbdrive. I've got Xubuntu on a thumbdrive on my keychain. When I'm working on a computer and I need to sidestep windows I just boot from the usb and I've got an instant Linux box.

^^that is also a good idea, I use to keep fedora and linux mint on a flash drive...dual boot on a flash drive...DSL and Puppy work well on older machines as well.

With ubuntu, you can edit the grub bootloader to show and load windows 7.

Are you getting any specific errors, or just a refusal to boot? I've got Win 7 running on a dial boot with Ubuntu (8.04 LTS mind you) with no issues.

If you want to safely install Linux while using Win7 I would recommend using Wubi installer. It's a Windows program that lets you safely install Ubuntu and GRUB loader without messing your bootloader. Windows7 boot will never recognize Ubuntu, but Grub does recognize Windows.

Whenever I do duel boots or set them up on my friends systems, I always start with Windows and then finish with Linux so the final bootloader in every case is GRUB.

Kubuntu on mine.

Just do this, that way you can take it (almost) anywhere!
