Requirements for College

Posted 12 January 2006 - 02:38 PM

I know there are a lot of people on this forums that are either in college or have gone through college, so I though this would be an excellent place to ask these questions.

I am only in 9th grade now, but in a few weeks we'll be making our schedules for next year (10th grade). And one of my friends who takes German has been trying to get me to take German for 3 years now.

And he keeps talking how all colleges require at least 2 years of foreign language.

Is this true? What are some of the minimum requirements in the college you go to?

Thanks.

for certian colleges it is, for mine it wasnt.

My college was fairly easy to get into in general, but what you really need to look at are the finaical aid requirements, so that going is much much cheaper

you should take 2 semesters of a language (so german 1 and 2 in your case), after that its up to you. i needed 2 language credits and ended up taking them my senior year of skool with all the freshmen and sophmores hahahah. it was ok though cause i never showed up and passed the tests or just showed up an hour into the class with a slurpee or something.

I jammed my finger up college's nose and made it bleed.

Regardless, I wish I had learned a foreign language. Even if a college doesn't require that, I would suggest learning one while it's being paid for by our education system. Also, It gets harder learn that stuff later on in life.

Oh wow, I might actualy have to take German then... Thats pretty gay. You think I would be able to get into a good college for computer science/programming without a second language? I'll be in AP Calc 1 math class and have some programming classes like VB and java in 11 and 12 grade, so maybe that could help.

they're looking for someone well rounded. so, they want you to take a foreign language, some math, some english, extracurriculars (sports/clubs/band/choir/etc) look SUPER good to them. and of course, decent grades too, lol. otherwise, do what you want.

making requirements for college isn't a big of a deal as u make it out to be. take what you want, try new things, work hard, and most of all, have as much fun as you can while doing it. you only get to go to school once (unless you're retarded, then you can do senior year over and over and over...lol). :P

the only skools that don't require a foreign language (for the most part) are strictly tech skools like nova attends, so if you plan on getting into CalTech or MIT or maybe even New Mexico Tech or something, then you're fine without it. Getting in however (to the first two)... so uh, just take the class.

Take your damn language, you'll probably like it more than you think.

and suprisingly enough, learning french made learning programming a hell of a lot easier.

he has a point. it helps you make sense out of pages full of what looks like garbage...which we ALL know how that feels. now, as for german...it's up to you to pick which one you wanna take. personally, i'd recommend french or spanish, as they're more widely used (french is the second official 'international' language behind english...hence why you'll see the upcoming olympics w/ a lot of french and english. and spanish...well, if u wanna order tacos from sloth). just my opinion though.

Also, choose something that is commonly used around your area. We have a large hipanic population around here, so naturally, spanish is more common to be taken in our highschool.
