Jobs, that will look good for IT/programmer?

Posted 27 November 2009 - 09:07 AM

My goal in life is to work as an IT/Pogramming Simulations/Games. I am 14 and looking for a part time job out side of Web Design (just a hobby). I figured I'd look for jobs that would give me more experience with comptuers and look better when im older. I was going to talk to a computer store close by about if they need help. If not I will do as i posted in another forum, Just start my own local website buisness.

Not sure if a computer store can give you enough progrmming experience, and I really don't think that a job there will somehow help you directly in the programming career field, although you get one priceless element from that - communication with other people. Collaboration and good communication skills are a must when applying for a programming position, so that would be great to have developer as soon as possible.

As of the career, at this age you probably won't get many internship opportunities, but you have the chance to learn on your own. Try developing stuff on your own, something you like. Develop a bunch of websites and later you will probably want to show them to someone, and that is going to play a good role, as there is a chance that some person will want you to make him something similar. It all requires work and even more passion about the job.

When you will be a bit older (let's say, in junior high), you can start looking for some internships or possibilities to shadow a developer to learn about the development process from the inside (there are a bunch of opportunities like this offered even by major companies).

Also, don't hesitate to participate in varios developer contests (and trust me, there are plenty of those). Although sometimes you don't fall in the right age categories, there is always a way to show your abilities.

Not really even by the standards in Kansas, but whatever, if you say so. The age I meant is at least 16 going to 17.

Freshmen count as "senior high"? I always thought 6th-8th was middle school, 9th-10th was junior high and 11th-12th was senior high?

Yep, mine was:

K - 6 [Elementary School]
7 - 8 [Middle School]
Freshman - Senior [High School]

We didn't really have a junior/senior high school thing going on.

Dunno if this will help or not, but in my high school, I did a number of computer courses such as 4 years computer science, 2 years ccna, 2 years computer maint. 3 years of web design, and 2 years of assisting the districts system administrators. To complement that, I now have 4.5 years of being a Tactical Network Specialist in the Marines, which is basically dealing with everything from satellite data communications down to installing windows, and everything in between.

CCNA and CCNP plus a few other certs, and I'm looking to get a decent sysadmin job while I go to college (for comp sci and IT) This doesn't include the dozens of things I've worked on in my own time. Never limit your options, and experience is your friend :)
