Should i learn C# first?

Posted 02 December 2009 - 07:19 AM

Hi

I was just wondering whether it would be wise to learn C# first or should i just jump straight into XNA? I did the video tutorial on the XNA site for the 2D UFO shooter game and didn't find it too hard, but some bits i found slightly difficult to follow.

If so can anyone reccomend any useful resources for C#/XNA?

Thanks

"Head First C#" is a pretty good book for beginners, and "Pro C# 2008 and the .NET 3.5 Platform" is great once you have some experience. As for XNA, SixOfEleven on here has some great tutorials.

And NO! Dont jump in to XNA without learning straight up C# first. programmersheaven.com has a GREAT 328 page tut on every nook and crany of C#, read that then get into XNA.

Start with learning C#. You don't really have to learn how to write Window forms applications or WPF applications. Understand the basics of creating a Console application with C#. It would be helpful if you were to learn object-oriented programming concepts, they will be invaluable when you get to creating large, complex games with XNA. The bigger the game the more complex it will be and having your code well organized using classes will be a big help when you are creating your games. You don't technically have to learn the idea of inheritance and polymorphism but they would be helpful to pick up. Especially if you want to use some sort of screen management system.

What I'm saying is try and have a strong grasp of the language and how it is used. You don't necessarily have to be an expert but intermediate knowledge would be most helpful.

Sorry, I am a little dense today. Can you post a direct link to the tut. I really can't find that one on the site, but I would like to look at it to advance my knowledge of C#.

I recommend you to learn a bit of C# first. Jumping straight into XNA might be easy for now, but as you go along the way and want to create harder stuff, your base knowledge of C# will be limited.
