Intel Announces IA32 48-Core Processor?

Post icon  Posted 09 December 2009 - 11:56 AM

This is a bit old but it really excites me: Intel Announces 48-Core "Single-Chip Cloud Computer"

So the question is: How long do I have to wait to put something like this in my desktop computer!!! And will it cost less than say a Cray CX1

How long will it be until I have a supercomputer in my pocket? Or has that already happened?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Very interesting! This will be something for me to follow and see how it develops. Thanks :)

I've heard rumors of a 128 core but I'd have to search to find substantiating evidence.

Give it 10 years and kids will make fun of us for having single digit cores...

It doesn't surprise me. After Intel's purchase of the cilk++ extension to C++ for managed multicore programming (super easy to use and free by the way), they probably have more promise for the selling of multicore processors.

EDIT:

I watched a Stanford colloquium on how companies are making a major effort to move to multi cores... I think it was from 2006, and with the sequential processor not getting much to any faster then I can see why.

Also with the addition of multithreading to the C++ standard it is obvious that this is the way of the future... immediate at least.

Well Intel has had the Tatflops Research Chip out for a while and they stated several years ago that multi-core was the direction they planned to go.

The difference between the Traflops research chip (80 cores) and the new 48-core chip is accessibility. Intel does envision this new chip to be within consumer reach.

IF you really think about it though, How many processors do you currently have?

I have a quad-core processor and 2 graphics processors... I already have 6Processors available. Now I don't know much about the graphics processors (using the Cuda libraries I can have them do basic math... thats all I have used them for so far) but I do know that each of my quad cores has 2 execution pipes...

So part of the problem is that we as programmers are not really taking advantage of what we have available already!

Its amazing how much computing power is WASTED. How many clock cycles are spent on NOP...

be a software engineer is a matter of time, although these big advatages,it really concern me! I don't wanna think that in the future every apps will be really soo fast ... no matter the code, no matter every ways tof develop ...
