Combining Image Files

Post icon  Posted 10 December 2009 - 08:42 PM

I know this is out there and probably illogical but I was wondering if it was possible to take multiple multiple picture files and compact them into one file.... and then retrieve them from the program later?

If you can help please teach me a way to combine any amount of image files into one file :D

Module Module1
	Sub combine()
		Dim img1 As New Bitmap("i1.jpg")
		Dim img2 As New Bitmap("i2.jpg")
		Dim img3 As New Bitmap("i3.jpg")
		Dim img4 As Bitmap
		Dim saver As Image
		'Code to combine img1-3 and store them into img4
		saver = img4
		saver.Save("i4.jpg")
	End Sub
End Module

What exactly do you mean by compacting them into single file?

1. To join images into a larger image?
2. Compact them with zip or rar or whatever?

Can you please be more specific?

Well I was looking to compact them into a Zip like archive but if it is possible, rather then zip I wanted to make a archive that only my program would be able to retrieve the images from although unnecessary. But either way I'll worry about that later I'd like to know how to Compact them to a Zip or Rar for the time being. =]

The bottom line with .jpg files is that they are already well compressed - you can only reduce the size significantly by either reducing the dimensions or reducing the quality of the encoding. A free program like GIMP will allow you to resize and save with different quality levels. If you just want to group the .jpg's together, you can use any archive method e.g. .zip to store them, but don;t expect any significant further compression - and you may even experience file expansion when zipping up already compressed files. The zip ideais used by Java - a .jar file is a zipped collection of .class files and other data files.

Well I'm not looking for compression... my goal is to keep the images organized into one file so my program can pull from them in a quick manor.

This is like a good place to start. If you'll need any help, I could search for a sample code in my previous projects.

Hope this helps.
