Bad.

More elaboration later but first the javascript window, NEVER put something up unless it's done. Get someone to look over your writing and introductions, english is bad.

You make yourself sound desperate way too fast and say you'll take low rates, bad move. People will take advantage of this.

As I said, more elaboration later.

I realized you were right about this immediately and took that part off.

Well, I don't have any clients or anything yet so its just for people to preview the look of the site.

Still a lot of work to do so thanks for the input. Any additional input is welcome.

Newer and better color pallet.

I am also going to eventually center the layout.

Also add a footer.

Check out Adobe Kuler for a good idea as to a color theme.

As far as the design you need to work on images for sure, straight code can only get you so far.

You need some design talents to be able to code websites by yourself anyways. Why? Because whenever a coder has an amazing site they normally coded a designers vision, so even IF you have no skills in image creation you need to learn design to pull this off, things such as whitespace, typography, proportions, composition rules, and color theory can seriously make or kill any design.

As for right now I can give you some ideas but I won't guide you through an entire design.

Overall the font needs to be smaller. Never use absolute black as font, go with more of a charcoal (#666 or #555), it's easier on the eyes and is more appealing in most cases, same as using straight white on black.

The menu really needs some work on size, tone it down and have it align with the header or make the header go all the way across the content area instead of partially. (this also includes making the left bar smaller)

Much past that some good reading of design principles as well as looking at good CSS galleries will give you plenty of ideas.

Very cool. I'll take all that into account.

I feel like I should mention my target audience is local small businesses or small scale websites. Nothing big corporate or anything like that. Doesn't mean I shouldn't strive for the best possible design though.

Again, thanks. I wish someone told me this stuff straight the last time I "designed" a website.

I work for about the same market but no telling who might stumble across a small site so it's best to make impressions when you can.

Truth.

How is it looking now? Does it look as hopeless as when you first looked at it?

I added a footer, aligned the buttons with the banner, and made the navigation smaller as well as applied some formatting to the content and chose my words more carefully.

One word: Whitespace

The page feels incredibly tight as of the current version, the font size is getting there. You need a lot more padding on areas for sure to improve the amount of whitespace on site.

Again, look at some of the CSS galleries and make notes of what you like.

The background is clean, I'll give you that, though make sure you have permission to use it if you didn't make it.

Header I'd make into white text and get rid of the border/background.

Main content, you need to get rid of the border and maybe make it into a no bg color with the <p> and <h#> tags having boxes around them instead.

The footer I'd get rid of the BG color and the border so it blends in better.

Color scheme you need to harmonize, the menus colors don't match the background, though that's a simple fix with the eyedropper tool in photoshop and copying some hex codes.

Went ahead and tweaked the css a bit:
body
{
	margin:0; padding:0;
	background-color: #024A68;
}

#wrapper
{
	width: 1024px;
	border:1px #000 solid;
	margin-top:0px;
	padding: 10px;
	padding-top: 10px;
	padding-bottom: 10px;
	padding-left: 0px;
	background-color: #F7EDC1;
	margin-right: auto;
	margin-left: auto;
	background-image:url('background3.jpg');
}

}

I didn't really clean up much given I don't have much time at the moment, but it should demonstrate what I meant, screenshot attached.

It was a quick edit so I suggest you build on it if you like it instead of using as is. Possibly set the footer bg to be the same as the main bg and remove all margins on it so it looks like it's not part of the main content.

Transparency would go a long way with this one, especially rounded corners but live edits can only do so much.

Hey that looks nice. Amazing what a touch of a little experience can bring to a design. I'm going to mess around with the ideas you gave me tonight.

I got the background image from http://www.sxc.hu/.

As always, thanks for the help.

Reading upon design and viewing galleries is a great way to learn those types of things. Oh, and do note that was 10 minutes, imagine what you can do in a few hours.

I would not mention that I would like to learn new things when I purpose myself for freelance works.

MY suggestion to you is to start working at RentACoder and use this as evidence for experience and good ratings. Your portfolio needs work (bigger projects). Contact form is not a project.

Anyway, keep working hard, take big projects and gain experience. Good luck!

Okay, so I started doing some projects on rentacoder. Nothing really big yet, mostly CSS type stuff. Profile:

My RentACoder Profile

Question 1: Should I include my rentacoder profile in my portfolio somewhere? I currently have a 9.75 rating out of 4 projects. I think it would unnecessary for a seasoned veteran but someone just starting out...

Question 2: One project I did was to reorganize the source order of an HTML page. They buyer wanted the content to appear in the HTML before anything else for SEO purposes so I put the content at the top of the HTML file and used CSS to position the elements of the page in the exact order as they appeared prior to the reordering. Is this a project I should put in my portfolio? The website has a lot of errors in the HTML that has nothing to do with me, would this reflect badly?
