Visual Studios Settings What is yours?

Posted 30 December 2009 - 10:48 AM

I'm just curious to see what type of Visual Studios settings other coders like to work with. Since I look at my code and screen at long periods of time, it's better for my eyes to see a black background, so I have the following Visual Studios theme for my editor.

I also have the all toolsbars hidden except for the Solution Explorer, Editor, and Debug window (which all but the editor are on auto-hide). I've noticed this gives me less distractions, so I can focus more on the code that I work on. Also, I rely less on MS toolbox and use custom code using what tools I do know how to use via code, and customize them to my liking, which makes more customizable reusuable code. AFAIK anyways.

Well, do share. I'm interested in knowing other people's visuals studios custom themes. If we want we can megaupload them and share the link, but I don't know of the legality of that on DIC, so I'd have to run it by an admin first.

Well I use Consolas as my font with the default colors that come out of the box with Visual Studio. Since I have dual monitors I have my Solution Explorer/Toolbox/Properties window on the 2nd monitor (and combined into one with tabs at the bottom to switch between views.

This is how mine looks when working in Visual Studio

Like PC, I use Consolas 10 as the font, but my background is a custom beigey-eggshell colors that dates from using XEmacs. Other than that I've not messed with it much.

I wish I had two monitors...but then I'd have less room on my desk for the other crap I've accumulated...mainly soda cans and water bottles :D

@PsychocCoder, how did i know you would be the first to reply to this.

@JackOfAllTrades and @PsychoCoder, I think I'm going to like using Consolas at a 10pt font from what I've seen on PsychoCoders screen shot. Changing font-family now.

going to just change the font-size to 10pt. My font is already on Consolas, guess it's the default, and The Dark-Side template didn't change it.

Consolas was actually (from what I've read) created by Microsoft specifically with programmers in mind

Quote

Consolas is aimed for use in programming environments and other circumstances where a monospaced font is specified

And that would be why it is the default font for Visual Studios with a 10pt font. It's so easy on your eyes. I want what R&D they did to create that font for programmers.

I increased the font size and set it to callibri, which I think looks nice. I keep the colors the same, basically- I'm just used to it, I see green and expect comments, etc. although I've been tempted to change it a few times to be easier on my eyes.

My font is Tahoma, I hide the toolbox. I have dual monitors as well and Pyscho I really like your layout. I may do that and dock Solution Explorer, Properties and the like on my other monitor.

@Sethro, I couldn't stand looking at that photo. Not because the template isn't good, but because I saw VB code.

JK! ;)

I have been using the "standard" settings, but you all have inspired me. I'll be trying out some of these configurations this week!

I use the Moria Alternative theme.

I found that the black background is much easier on the eyes. I can't stand looking at the white background anymore.

switched to the moria alternate as well, changed the font size down, changed the font itself to callibri. I like it a lot better than the default.
