Posted 30 December 2009 - 02:14 PM

Hi Guys........

I studies before java in college but i didn't understand it well(professional)... and I miss understand some feature so i want to study it again...

I need your advice for which book should i read ??? I studied before from java how to program(ditel) , and it was a good book but i want another one that is simpler...

I see some pages from "head first java" and it was interesting since it does provides graph with the pages to make it more easy to understand it... but unfortunately that this book was released on 2005 , so it's so old and it uses java 5.0 and now it's 6.0(more thing available)...

so, for which book do u recommend for me to start with ?? I need books like"head first java"...

Sorry for my bad English and thanks alot Guys ........

Don't worry, use your 5.0 book
new features from 6.0 will become clear to you when you will do the exercises and you will look for the classes in the 6.0 API

Is there are big difference between 5.0 and 6.0 ??

and if I understand the 5.0 well will it be obvious to me when I read about the 6.0 ?? I mean If I read the 6.0 API will it be clear for me , no need to read a book with a 6.0 ???

Thanks alot pbl

I always found the head first books a good read. I always found the best book was the one written by Ditel and Ditel. The api across all versions of java are pretty much the same, apart from new classes etc being added to newer versions. But once you learn how to use to api, you can use it across all versions. Learning stuff from java 5 wont make much of a difference when it comes to 6. Its mainly additions made to 6, most of the original concepts are still there. Methods which have become depreciated are usually updated in a different form, but these are simple to pick up. But if you do want new books, I suppose it makes more sense to get the most recent. But as I say, you wont notice to much difference to the slightly older books.

I personally like Java For Dummies (9 books in 1) by Doug Lowe and Barry Burd. It starts from the beginning and provides a solid teaching of the basics (OOP, Primitives, Methods) as well as some of the advanced concepts (GUIs, Graphics and 2D Animations, EE and Server-Side programming, Threading, Collections, JDBC)- note that certain advanced concepts are covered more heavily than others.

If you studied Java before and are just going for a good review then a nice book to check out would be Programmer's Guide to Java™ Certification, A: A Comprehensive Primer, Second Edition
By Khalid A. Mughal, Rolf W. Rasmussen . It's not an introduction book but it will provide a really good review to the language for you (and will probably teach you something new). It is a really good book!

A good reference that goes hand-in-hand with books is the Java Tutorials. They cover the major classes and give sample code. http://java.sun.com/...rial/index.html
