New York's Heroin Manual

Posted 04 January 2010 - 04:18 PM

So apparently New York's health department has published a manual on how to properly use heroine. Here's a link to a video about. So what are your thoughts on this? I personally think they're going about it all wrong. While this guide will probably help prevent disease and overdose for some (Probably very few) I think it is also a waste of money. I don't think many junkies out there are going to take the time to read a manual on the drug their hooked on. Anyway, just my 2 and I just wanted to hear what you guys had to say about it.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

It's pretty disturbing. Why bother making a safety manual for something that's illegal anyway?

Wouldn't this manual be better suited for Las Vegas? Or are they going to mass produce it and publish it all over the U.S. that way heroine sales skyrocket.

I don't see why this has to be it's own thread. This is a technique known as harm reduction. It is very much an alternative or adjunct to prohibitionist drug use prevention tactics. In fact, harm reduction was precisely the alternative that I was trying to spark discussion about in the prohibition related thread I made in this same forum.

Plus, if you want to have a serious discussion about something, you might want to look into what exactly it is. To start you off:
A heroine is more often considered to be a female hero, as opposed to heroin which is more often considered to be an addictive substance derived from morphine. (As OliveOyl was apparently the first to mention). Heroin is diacetylmorphine, a morphine molecule with the addition of two acetyl groups, also referred to as the 3,6-diacetyl ester of morphine. The 3,6- indicates the location of the functional groups at the third and sixth positions of the morphine skeleton. An acetyl is a functional group that consists of a methyl(a carbon and three hydrogen, CH3) single bonded to a carbonyl (a carbon double bounded to an oxygen, C=O). Thus the chemical formula for the acetyl functional group is COCH3. What this does for the heroin molecule is increase it's lipid solubility and allow it to penetrate the blood brain barrier more rapidly. Once in the body, deacetylase enzyme breaks heroin down into 6-monoacetylmorphine and then into regular morphine. For this reason heroin is what is considered to be a prodrug for the administration of morphine. It is considered to be one and a half to twice as potent as morphine, but this is only thanks to the acetyl moieties. The effects of heroin and morphine are indistinguishable.

I heard about this on the radio today. I think they're finally accepting the fact that people are going to be doing irresponsible things that are questionable and illigal, and they're trying to save lives, at least, by trying to help them do it right. The HIV spread might go down.

I would very much so like to see a video/manual about improving prostitution standards. I mean did you see some of the crack whores that walk the streets.

For crying out loud ladies have some dignity. Clean yourselves up and improve your appearance. You will get more business that way. :)

I personally find it disgusting, and had it happened in my state where they used my tax dollars for this crap I would have a shit fit. A needle exchange to help prevent the spread of disease is one thing, but a document to show them how to properly use an illegal drugs, and pay for it with taxpayers dollars, is asinine in my opinion

To be fair, half the manual is about seeking medial/psychiatric help for depression and how to quit.

Why didn't they make an error that caused everyone to overdose? If you want to do heroin then move to another country where your allowed, not the U.S.
