Norton, in my years of experience, is nothing but a bloated whale that does next to nothing except eat resources and everything in it's path. Once you can .... RUUUUUN ... and get Norton off that system!

I'm guessing his last computer got fried by viruses, so he decided to get a new one. His parent's decided that they knew everything about computers and randomly picked a pricey anti-virus that sounded 'official' and demanded he waste his resources running it.
Cool story bro.

STOP READING MY MIND!
That's almost exactly what happened. The difference is that the last computer I had was a POS, and I installed Ubuntu on it. Eventually I told them that even after that upgrade I couldn't use it for anything useful. I don't think I've ever gotten a legit virus before...

I use McAfee under force by my university. I'd use Microsoft Security Essentials if I had a choice. It's free and I've heard good things

I had Norton for a while and even paid for a resub once. Having used others, it's garbage. I use MSE now, no complaints. Used to use Avira but it didn't play nice with 64 bit Windows 7 and Zune software.

Hi,
Well, used McAfee for a while. But because of several FP's and no ability to make exclusions, had to change.
This is when I went to NOD32, unfortunately, it took quite a lot of system resources for me, and takes far to long to scan files, especially the file and web guards.
Now using and loving the very basic, but extremely effective Microsoft Security Essentials.

Raynes post is win. Common sense works well and doesn't cost money.
I don't use anybecause I run Linux, although I guess I'd say clamav.
Happy? I didn't say Linux was awesome or anything like that.

At home, I run Linux and keep backups. For family and friends that use Windows, I have them do both avast and Microsoft's free thingy. Even with Avast, had one person get his svchost.exe infected. I gotta start charging for this work.
At work, we use Sophos, and don't have any problems, but we also enforce our IT policy.. except in IT of course.

On most *nix systems all you really have to worry about is someone rooting your box. If an application or script doesn't have root access it's probably not going to be able to inflict any significant damage. God bless sensical access and user policies. Even if malicious scripts are floating around, patches are generally produced within days to halt the spread of it.
The whole remark about the lack of popularity of *nix machines behind the reasoning for the lack of malicious software is bullshit. Consider the gigantic market share of webservers running *nix machines. That market is dominated by open source OS's and you could inflict devastating losses on companies if you took them offline. You still don't see it happen.
Most *nix kernels (especially BSD's) are incredibly stable and fairly secure out of the box.
