Since your new to programming, I would recommend a text editor. SciTE is my favorite, but Notepad++ isn't bad either (Windows only, but it runs perfectly on WINE (I saw that you listed Linux as your OS))

As for IDEs, Netbeans and Eclipse are my favorites.

We have JCreator installed on some of the computers in my school, I don't personally like it, but whatever suits you.

I would go for Eclipse, because it underlines your errors as you type. I haven't explored Netbeans in depth, I just tried it and, for large projects, the time needed to test your application is wayyyyy longer than Eclipse.

I mostly use JPadPro, but I recently installed Netbeans and Eclipse, although I haven't really used NetBeans enough to know it, and I've hardly used Eclipse at all.
JPadPro is much faster than Netbeans, but I like how NetBeans gives you a list of all of your variables and methods contained in the class. Also, it's much easier to build a project on NetBeans, in my opinion. But it is really, really slow. A 50-line half-completed program took 19 seconds to compile in NetBeans, and less than 3 seconds in JPadPro.
One of the things that I really don't like about NetBeans, though, is that it doesn't show you your errors. You can't compile your code, you can just run it. In JPadPro (and Eclipse, I think), you can compile your code, and it will show you most syntax errors. NetBeans will run your program, even if it will crash halfway through. There's probably a way to fix that, but I'm not sure how.

There are actually a couple threads in the Java Programmers sub-forum on this topic. You might want to check them out.

I'd have to say Netbeans.

For me, Eclipse. When I tried netbeans, it was very very slow. Maybe this differs from system to system though
