I want to find the best IDE to use with ADA and my skillset.

Im in my last term at my University. I've had classes in Java (3) and in VB.NET (2). Im alot more comfortable with VB.NET than Java but I get the jist of both.

I want to be able to kick ADA's ass. I'm much more clear headed these last semesters at school than I was last year so I intend to learn ADA and be very good at it. That's why I want your advice. I want to get off on the right foot.

I've used Eclipse and Visual Studios. I've not used much more than that. Got any advice?

I did see that but I haven't tried it yet. My instructor spoke about it having a vicious time with some of the libraries if you ran VISTA. Unfortunately my ex's laptop that I now have runs Vista. I need to upgrade for sure but until I get 7 are there anymore that anyone has used (besides ADAGIDE and GNATBench)?

Well that sucks. If it wasn't for it being a requirement for class I wouldn't use it. That's why I was needing some advice on the IDE.

Hopefully some of the 100+ thousand users will have some experience with it and have some ideas. Maybe! I still have a couple of days before I have to start coding.

SciTE is more of a text editor than an IDE, but it supports Ada and is pretty good. (I'll use it for quick, pointless Ruby or Java programs rather than wait for Eclipse to load)

EDIT: I should have mentioned, you would need to have all your Ada executables already installed, and then configure them with SciTE

I'll point out that Emacs has an ada-mode built in, I believe. If you're willing to spend a day to get comfortable with Emacs, you'll be set. Knowing how to use Emacs will be useful in general, as you can use it to write code for anything.

Don't be too quick to believe Ada isn't used anymore. As much as some people would like to see it go away, it's in the same boat as COBOL. If you do any contracting for the military, they'll love to see Ada on that resume.

That isn't really the point I was trying to make.

I guess I just don't really think in terms of what can make me the most money, or look best on my resume. I'm not a career coder. I'm not going to tell her to run off and learn COBOL.

? But it's what you said =p Ada isn't even a bad language - it has a lot of great features. The problem is it's such a large language that it's hard to use everything correctly.

Nobody really wants to use Ada.

As for whether or not it's a good language, that is beyond the scope of this discussion. I'm tired of the language wars.
