What helps you code better?

Posted 23 January 2010 - 10:48 PM

I decided to quit caffeine about mid December of 2009. After a few weeks of withdrawl symptoms (and a killer headache that lasted a couple days) I started to feel better, but I was different.

I noticed that I was less focused than usual. I stopped working on projects as much and spent more time lounging on the couch. When I did sit down at my computer to do some work, I found that I couldn't concentrate all that well. It had been over a month since I quit drinking caffeine, so I began to think it wasn't just withdrawl symptoms anymore.

So, I decided to drink a Mountain Dew (in the name of science) and about 20 minutes later I found myself coding again. Like a block was lifted in my head. Caffeine, old friend, why I ever doubted you I'll never know.

So, I ask you then, what's something that you find helps you code better?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Masturbating immediately before.

I can't do it during, because I need both hands.

Fortunately, I have 4 hands; my two and my fiance's two. So I can code and still make a sandwhich!

Hardrock, metal for daily use, death metal for projects that need to be done a day ago (can't get distracted by enunciated words)

Silence if I'm working on something new or confusing, any kind of (good) music if I'm just programming for the fun of it.

Im the same way Skaggles. I stopped drinking caffiene beginning of January, Mountain Dew mostly. Ive had a massive headache since almost all day and find it hard to concentrate on any personal projects.

Im thinking I might have start back or find something else.

For me it's not having slept for a while - in the weekdays, I wake up at 6 in the morning, and from 9PM-2AM I code ^.^

I usually listen to Runescape + Maplestory (MMORPGs) music while I code.
Here's my playlist: http://www.youtube.c...F455BBD388726FD

I usually code best to music. I'm never with out music playing in the background when I'm coding. My playlist varies from day to day. Quite often there will be a lot of Bon Jovi in the mix, my favorite band. A lot of it is 80s and 90s music. Something with a good beat and is a little upbeat. Used to always code to Roxette's Joyride CD. Now I just set a playlist to shuffle on iTunes.

If I'm writing out something that is mostly just same old same old (basic GUI's, simple classes, anything I really understand) I usually rock out to some heavy metal. If not I like Coheed and Cambria, Classic Rock, or something along those lines. If it's something I'm really new to, I need silence though.

Seriously, the best site I discovered last year was SodaFM. Truly awesome music and free as in 'wife sex'.

Check it out here:
http://somafm.com/

You can open the radio stream with VLC.
