hey everyone . what good book for java beginner like my bro is good to learn from.. i let him read thinking java by bruce eckel and he got discouraged. because honestly its not really good for beginners. the approach is bad... anyone can suggest good books here? price dont matter.

Well depends, how quickly do you pick up on topics?

I have 2 java books, Absolute Java and Java, How to Program. Both great books.

If you want a slow paced easy to read then go with Absolute Java.
If you are one that wants to get in there and not stop until you have what you want and then some, go with Java, How to Program. They are the 2 books I have been using for class, seem to be good books.

I agree with erik.price on that link, but if you want a book, look at Core Java

I wouldn't recommend Core Java for an absolute beginner. Core Java was written for experienced programmers that are making the transition to Java. I actually learned with Java 2 for Dummies and found it to be a great book. The author is a CS professor and has a way of explaining core concepts using everyday examples that makes the information easy to understand and retain.

The book I am currently using is Introduction to Java Programming by Y. Daniel Liang.. it's pretty good.

I learned it at Wright State University, with the book "Starting Out with Java: From Control Structures through Objects 3rd ed." by Tony Gaddis. I base most of my tutorials off this book and eric.price's link. ^__^ And Raynes..... -____- what to do with you....?

Head First java is the best book for beginners in my humble opinion , it is very simple and easy to understand

Head First Java by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates is a very good option for beginners. You start out playfully but become a serious Java programmer by the end of it.

I have to agree that Thinking In Java is not a good place to start....I started on Java for Dummies: All-In-One Desk Reference. It's humorous and easy to read. It provides a great background to Java from which you can move to more complex and advanced books. Currently I am reading Java: The Complete Reference Seventh Edition by Herbert Schildt. This one goes into much greater depth.
