How do I build a custom control based on an ItemsControl?

I'm looking to write a coverflow lookalike, from scratch, and I just need to work out my starting point. I've done a decent bit with WPF before, I'm just not sure how to make custom controls, let alone ones that inherit from base element types. I couldn't seem to find anything much on Google, so I was wondering, does anyone know how to start it off? (For example, I want to lay the items out in a vertically oriented VirtualizingStackPanel).

TIA! :^:
