MMORPG Design/engine help

Posted 26 January 2010 - 03:11 PM

Me and my friends are tring to make a MMORPG using C++. THe game will be a 2D side-scroller that allows you to have guns and swords, etc. My question is how would we go about doing this? For a while we were using the Eclipse engine, but it didn't allow us to have quests and the like. Is there a easy way to do this? Thanks for all suggestions.

No.

If you want an easy way, then I would suggest that you make a small single player version of the game with GameMaker, or something similiar.

If you really mean MMO(Massively Multiplayer Online), then you will need an intimate knowledge of C++, knowledge in network programming over servers, a graphics API(DirectX, OpenGL, SDL), and a lot of knowledge of game programming in general.

I would suggest that you read this first:

A side scroller would be interesting twist on a MMORPG... screw top down - it's all about the side view!

Unless that 'something new' is a STD.... then suppression is always good. :P

Check out Visual C++ rather than eclipse, I only use eclipse for java.

An RPG is no easy task at all, but an MMORPG is even harder.

Start with something a little simpler and work your way up.

Well thank you for all the replies. Does anyone know of a beginning game programming book, like a "For Dummies" book or something? One more thing. Is there a graphics engine that anyone would reccomend? Thank you for your concerns.

I'll beat sixofeleven to the punch - XNA. It's free.. it's from Microsoft.. and there are tons of information on their site. http://creators.xna.com/en-US/

I'm not exactly sure you should be making large scale networked games with XNA, but I don't think you will end up making a large scale networked game in the first place. People who can make MMOs are people with years of experience and can complete a gigantic program. So, you should scale back to some simple multiplayer side scroller and try XNA, GameMaker, or something else.

Actually I have played Maplestory. The point was we were trying to make something better. Or well, different. But I will check out XNA.

If you are just starting out with game programming then something that is easy to use and understand is probably the way to go. Read the pinned thread above about Game Development Career Tips. It should really be given a better title but it has advice for those wanting to start with game programming.
