How Many Service Members Are Here?

Posted 28 January 2010 - 12:21 PM

In a desperate attempt at creating decent and somewhat interesting conversation in the lounge, I thought I'd try to get some info outta ya. It's been a while, if at all, since we've had a decent roster of military personnel here, so have at it!

Active Duty, Reserves, Guard, ROTC, JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, Plan to Join, Retired, etc.:

Service:

Rank (E/O - #, __Sgt or whatever):

Last/Current Assignment (if not confidential):

Job:

Deployment Rotation:

Honors/Awards:

Awesome Experiences or Stories:

Active Duty, Reserves, Guard, ROTC, JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, Plan to Join, Retired, etc.: AFROTC Det. 643 at WSU, Dayton, Ohio. 3rd squadron, Golf flight. W00t! Go Golf Gorillas! (I swear I didn't come up with that >_> Our mascot on our shield is Donkey Kong with ammo belts across his chest holding a missle XD)

Service: United States Air Force

Rank (E/O - #, __Sgt or whatever): C/ 4C (lowest rank for 100's in AFROTC). In high school AFJROTC I graduated as a c/ 1stLt (0-2).

Last/Current Assignment (if not confidential): None, I'm a student first, cadet second. :/

Job: Student. Aspiring for computer engineer or simulation programming (:pirate: this would be where my game dev would come in handy tee hee hee). I am qualified so far, or at least I haven't been blacklisted yet, to be a pilot, and I've even taken 2 years of Ground School Instruction already (yes, I have co-piloted a plane). I would like to fly a C-5 or F-22, especially since that's really all Ohio deals with mainly. They're sweet planes.

Deployment Rotation: None atm.

Honors/Awards: In AFJROTC I've gotten tons and tons.

Awesome Experiences or Stories:

Well, in AFJROTC we got to go up in the C-5's. They're freaking massive! The whole cockpit lifts up and could just like swollow 18 Greyhound Busses!

I also was on drill team for 4 years. Competed on the unarmed IDR, armed IDR, inspection, I was the Honor Guard commander (won trophies ;)), unarmed exhibition, quiz bowl, and knock-out. Got a medal for knock outs as well (where everybody in the competition gets commanded to do facing movements or marching and gets "knocked out" if they do something wrong or anticipates a command) and on inspection team I got commended by a general for my amazing military bearing, exquisite uniform appearence, and military knowledge. :) I was also on the front page of several local newspapers one time for leading the Memorial Day parade with my Honor Guard, and the pic was so beautiful and patriotic, I loved it! I was looking up at the American flag (which I, the commander, was carrying) making sure the eagle on top was facing forward and arranging the flag itself to where it would be most visible, but the way the reporter took the picture it looked like I was looking up at the flag in awe. <3 It was a cool pic. Too bad I didn't get a copy :(

Typing this out really made me realize how proud I am of myself. Self confidence and self worth +1000!

Active Duty, Reserves, Guard, ROTC, JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, Plan to Join, Retired, etc.: Former Active Duty and now Honorably Discharged

Service: U.S. Army

Rank (E/O - #, __Sgt or whatever): E5

Last/Current Assignment (if not confidential): Kansas and Iraq

Job: Intelligence Analyst

Deployment Rotation: Kansas -> Iraq -> Kansas -> Iraq

Honors/Awards: I don't really remember them all.

Awesome Experiences or Stories: Had a suspicious device that we called EOD to once. It was during the summer in Iraq (extreme heat) and both their bomb robots were broke. So one of them got suited up in his bomb outfit and went in. When he kneeled down at the device it exploded, causing him to rocket back towards us. We ran to see if he was okay. After taking his helmet off, he looked up at us and said. "I hate it when that happens."

Status: Out

Service: Navy

Rank: Petty Office 2nd class

Last Assignment: A ship on the east coast out of Norfolk (narrows it down don't it).

Job: Fire Control. -- starting fires not putting them out. -- i.e. death and destruction from afar. non-PC euphemism: "Urban redevelopment and population control"

Deployment Rotation: 3 1/2 years of school -- 2 1/2 years afloat. (atypical -- Fire Control is an afloat billet... not much need for shipboard fire control systems on land -- there are marines that take care of that.)

Honors/Awards: Numerous... unfortunately these were mostly for either blowing something up, or being along for the ride when someone else did *something* noteworthy (i.e. group awards).

Sea Stories: Many people join the military and have wonderful experiences and I certainly had my share. However, the Navy was also one of the greatest mistakes/missteps of my life and I spent the majority of the time miserable. So while I learned so many things, and went to places and had experiences I would never have seen without the Navy -- I also have the weight of six years of my life where I was nearly continuously unhappy.

You know it was a strange mixture. I was basically in trouble for one thing or another starting day #1. And yet, I was very good at my job and took a lot of pride in what I did... at the same time I was a poor excuse for a sailor (well... for a military sailor anyway). My uniform was rarely squared away. I was always on remedial PT. Unless some qualification was directly related to my job (or my pride), it was sure to get done only with my Chief standing over me the whole way. I never defiantly or directly shirked any duty -- but boy did I drag my feet at times. At the same time, when it came to my primary duties I worked very hard to be the best of the best (and indeed my team performed above and beyond expectations -- we innovated the field!)

So I suppose that my outwards appearance really reflected my entire experience. For six years I was miserable -- and at times I did some great things.
