Professional Gamer - to add or not to add to my resume?

Posted 31 January 2010 - 03:36 AM

I am applying for software engineering internships at a few companies over the summer and I was hoping to get advice on what to add to my resume. A couple of the companies I will be hoping to intern at are gaming companies. I was wondering whether it would be wise to note that I had played games professionally in the past. By playing professionally I mean I had been contracted to a league, paid with a salary, and was featured on television.

It will definitely separate me from the rest of the applicants but it might not be shed in the best light given the stereotypical image of a gamer. So therefore I was wondering whether I should include this with all my internships, just the internships involving gaming, or just leave it off.

Let me know what you think. Much appreciated. Thanks.

I would include it. Even the ones that are not to do with gaming will be interested in knowing you have been featured on TV etc. But definitely put it on the ones that are in the gaming industry.

In my opinion it would be advantageous to include in your applications for the gaming companies. If my resume looked a little bare I would also add it to the applications for the other companies too.

I would've also included it, atleast for the game companies. People working in game companies usually plays a lot of games, so I think it would separate you from the rest.

Would've also written which game it was. Because they've likely heard about it and maybe even played it, so there you have something to talk about if they mention it, and score some point with them. Atleast I think so :)

I would think of it as the same thing as something like being on a state sports team. It's all about achievement isn't it?

Plus, if you were a professional gamer, were you on a team? If so, then you definitely had to have good communication skills, leadership skills, in which companies like that.

I too would include it, it is after all an achievement, but be careful not to focus too much on that. Focus on what makes you a good Developer.

Hope you decided to include it as, if for no other reason, it will make your resume stand out amongst the dozens or perhaps even hundreds the HR rep will get. They're going to see resumes ad nauseum that look the same, sound the same, and likely have nearly the same content/experience. I'd be willing to bet that practically none of the other applicants can claim "professional gamer, featured on television".

A resume is all about getting noticed and getting invited to the interview. It's at the interview that you put to rest the stereotype of the typical gamer and come across as a serious, committed dev.

Good luck!

Yo! Its Fred Savage.

You can make it sound more professional by using the full name of the company or companies that you worked for since some games will have more than one company that helped put the game together.
