So I'm Thinking of Buying A Gun...

Posted 23 March 2006 - 11:07 PM

So I've been thinking of purchasing a hand gun, what's everyone think of having a firearm in your home? in your car? concealed carry? What type of gun should I get? Do you own a gun?

International members... what are the gun laws in your country?

You conservatives and your guns. You don't need a gun. What are you going to do with it?

There's nothing wrong with owning a gun, unless you're incredibly immature and/or stupid.

Being both, I'll probably never own one.

yeah yeah guns are pretty silly, but unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world where people respect other's property.

EDIT: and this crap about kids blowing their head's off and/or their friend's head off is bullshit, who in their right mind points a gun, loaded or not, at someones face and pulls the trigger? that's just ignorant.

That's like the time i changed my tire and was going to leave my car up on the jack to go get the tire patched, and my mother raised a hoo haw about it saying "some kid could crawl under your car and get crushed." if some kid see's a car propped up on a jack and thinks "i am gonna crawl under that thing" then he probably had it coming.

Hey

I am writing from the UK, where it is illegal to own a gun that isn't registered. Furthermore, gun registrations are given out only after many checks and normally go just to farmers. Guns must also be kept in a locked cupboard when they are not being used. Even our police are, in the main, unarmed. This means that we have very little in the way of gun crime or violent crime involving Guns. Yes, of course there will be people who find a way round the laws and obtain illegal guns, but these are very few. And, it is nearly always the illegal guns that cause the problems (I'm thinking of people like Tony Martin) and have shootings.

I think the idea of having guns is fundamentally wrong and will just result in more bloodshed.

Ehh the rest of the uneducated Philistines here that say guns are bad I will offer up some good advise from a competitive shooter.

Get your hunters education card -- it is usually a free cource provided by your states conservation dept and contrary to common belief it is mainly a 2-3 day gun safety cource.

If you have a range close to where you live or other friends that shoot go with them because what is right for some may not be right for others.
(I would like the power of a .45 however I know that because of the wrist surgery I had that I cannot fire one safely as the recoil is more then I can handle so my personal prefrence is along the lines of 9mm and .38 cal)

Also if you are going to spent 300-600 on a firearm besure to spend the extra $100 on a secure safe or cabinate (bolted to something immovable ) to secure it when it is not in your immediate control, this includes trigger locks if you have children they are a must if not use at your discretion Lock it stick it in the safe and leave knowing that any potential shit head wont be able to use your weapon to hurt or injure anyone else. ( no the dresser drawr is not a good place if someone breaks in and takes it congrats you just contributed to the crime rate. )

If you are going to carry make sure you invest in a defensive shooting class. it should include topics such as the laws surrounding self defence, and when to make the determination to actually draw and fire

Remember if you draw your weapon you had better be sure that you are legal and safe. Because you are intending to kill the person that is intending to kill you.

They are not toys

Besure to get a pistol that you can afford to shoot and can find ammo for.
sure the .50 desert eagle and the S&W 500 look cool but you cannot go in to your typical walmart and pick up shells for em not to mention they are ungodly heavy, For your first Pistol I would reccommend a .22 if you want a home defence gun shoot either a .357 magnum revolver or a 9mm semi-automatic if you desire you can then size up from there.

Having said all that

Glocks are extremely reliable they have a ergonomics that some people find uncomfortable

Springfield XD service pistols are also extremely reliable however there have been some issues in the past with the finish on the slide. They share the Glock ergonomics but dont have that funky 3 piece trigger

Taurus is another personal favorite they make baretta clones (however I like their line of vest pistols. Their Baretta model 92 clones have a diffrent ergonomic then the glock and other polimer framed pistols

For revolvers I would probally go with either a ruger or S&W .357 magnum with a 3 inch barrel ( you can fire .38 out of it as well so target ammo is cheaper then the defesive loads )
