Happy ground hog day!

Posted 02 February 2010 - 06:37 AM

Okay a little pointless but in Canada, and possibly in the USA, it is ground hog day. The legend is that every February 2 ground hogs come up out of their holes to check on how winter is. If they see their shadow there will be yet another six weeks of winter. I hope that the ground hog doesn't see his shadow today because I've had just about enough of winter. :)

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 1

It's February. Spring doesn't come until April. There's always six more weeks of winter on Groundhog Day.

Ya, I know. I can always wish though. :P

But at least winter is half over now. At least in the northern hemisphere.

So if it's sunny that means there's six more weeks of winter... this doesn't make much sense. Where does the groundhog have to be? It could be sunny in one place but cloudy in another (or even an hour or two later). How does Bill Murray fit into this equation?

The groundhog is Puxatawney Phil, in Puzatawney, PA. As for the Bill Murray connection, rent the movie 'Groundhog Day'.

Editted due to double posting....grrrr

If you can only pick one Bill Murray movie to watch watch Groundhog day. Do not, I repeat, do not, under any circumstances watch Lost in Translation. Awful.

What didn't you like about the movie? I loved it! Two people who felt utterly alone in a foreign country stick together.

On one hand, a man who is over the hill or at least basically peaked, suddenly feels that what he does doesn't really mean anything.

And a woman that married too young or to the wrong guy for her is left alone on her honeymoon.

I've seen Groundhog day many times. I'm asking how Bill Murray fits into real life, not as an actor in a movie. My main question was where the groundhog has to be as there are competing places, why it being sunny would mean there are six more weeks of winter, and what if it's sunny and then cloudy an hour later. It's more to do with the origin of the whole "if a groundhog sees it's shadow..." I added the Bill Murray bit as a joke.

Also, there are plenty of good movies Bill Murray has been in. The only one you really don't want to see is Garfield (which is his only regret in life).

I liked Lost in Translation, even if it did feel like a first film. Bill must have had worse movies than that... Garfield alone makes anything else forgivable by comparison.

Groundhog Day is fun. Stripes is Bill Murray in his prime. And, of course, Caddyshack.

It is just a weird belief. I was just trying to comment that, for the northern hemisphere, I believe we are officially halfway through winter with winter being approximately 12 weeks long, closer to 13 probably.

Maybe, if a groundhog comes out and doesn't see his shadow in a specific area they will have a milder winter for the next six weeks. It would be nice if that would happen. :) Except for the winter olympics out in Vancouver. They can have all the winter they need there. :)
