Referring to yourself as "we"

Posted 04 February 2010 - 11:41 AM

I've started to notice that when I talk/think to myself I usually refer to myself as "we".
"We need to take a shower."
"We should go to bed."
"We should have picked the other one."
"We should go to McDonalds."

I don't say it. I only think it.

I thought about this and I have come to the conclusion that I am referring to myself and my conscious(inner voice) as separate beings. Could thinking like this have negative effects?

I was just wondering if anyone else does this and also why people do it if others do do it.(referring to yourself as "we")

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

i cant stand going into a store and you ask for an item and they say something like "Sorry, I don't have any of those left in stock". I just want to be like, o really, you don't have any? Because you own best buy and all of the products inside the store.

but yeah OP, thats pretty weird. I notice that i swear at myself A LOT more than i swear out loud. Thats about it.

I use they instead of he/she if I don't know the gender of the individual in question.

Actually, I refer to myself as "we" in two circumstances:

1. Non-no2 related freelance work. "We build stuff" sounds infinitely better than "I make websites."

and

2. When the voices and I try to present a unified front.

Hey...I'm ALWAYS talking to myself. It's not uncommon to see me walking down the street, no headphones in, just having a really animated conversation...with ME!!! I also do the same thing in the car when I'm driving. Surprisingly enough, it helps me say what I want to say to people, even though I can't cuss them out in a professional setting. I bet you'll find me doing it a lot today on my way home.

The issue isn't with talking to yourself. I talk to myself all day, every day. The issue is talking to yourself, but refer to yourself as we. Example: It's lunchtime, you're hungry. In your mind, do your hear, "I'm hungry, time to eat!" or do you hear, "We're hungry, let's eat..."?

What do you mean by unified front?
And I should also clear up that I dont usually say "we" but I have been catching myself saying it sometimes
