SEO Ranking Confusion

Posted 07 February 2010 - 05:41 AM

This SEO Ranking thing really confuses the hell out of me!

On top of that, I cannot find what ranking a specific page on a specific site has for a given search word or phrase on any given search engine.

So, there is no way of measuring this holy grail called "RANKING"

Google, Yahoo, Bing and the rest wont tell anyone exactly how it works.

It seems like the algorithms change every other week.

And, to make it all worse, the "black hatters" manage to get their viagra sites above legitimate sites with reasonable to good content.

And this really pi$$es me off!!!

But then I type "Anat Hatfield" in the Google Search and hit <enter> and look at the return:

1st entry : "Anat" appears 33 places (including the title)

2nd entry : another page on the same site as 1st result.
Google quotes "Ned Geref Kerk. Hatfield ... Attractions and activities. Ambiance Safaris An Executive Venue Anat-Hatfield Anat-Menlyn. Special Offers ..." on the search results page summary ("Anat" appears twice) but is not present anywhere on the page if you click the link, load the page and have a look at the source.

3rd entry : Also another page on the same site as 1st result.
Google quotes "More Than A View Don Arcadia II. Attractions and activities. Alma Butchery Ambiance Safaris An Executive Venue Anat-Hatfield. Special Offers ..." on the search results page summary ("Anat" appears once) but is not present anywhere on the page if you click the link, load the page and have a look at the source.

4th entry is on a rating site. The word "Anat" appears 15 times which is half of the density of result 1 but much more than result 2 and 3.

5th entry on same site as 4th entry, "Anat" appears once only.

Now the interesting part!!!!
The 7th entry is for the Anat franchise itself. NOT the home page but "where_we_are.htm" and the word "Anat" is present 8 times here!!!

(REMEMBER, I AM LOOKING AT THE SOURCE OF THE PAGE, IMAGE NAMES, TITLES, EMAILS, THE LOT)

So, It looks like the results are grouped by site to start with.

BUT, on the franchise site home page, there are a bunch of links to pages about each franchise branch.
Display Text like "More Details" and targets like "where_we_are_CampusSquare.htm"

Each of the "More details" pages have "Anat" about 7 times (anywhere in source).

And here is another interesting thing: The Home page for the franchise contains "anat" 15 times BUT IS NOT IN THE FIRST 50 RESULTS. It is not even grouped with the first result from the site (7th entry)

I had a look but there is no "robots.txt" or "sitemap.xml" files on the franchise site.

So, why does a page containing the keyword 8 times appear way higher than a page containing the keyword 15 times WHEN BOTH PAGES ARE FROM THE SAME SITE?

Visually, the 1st entry has the keyword in the title, a h1 element, a website url display and as a link.
The 4th entry has it in the title, h1, an email address, a link to a web url, as the "alt" of an image as well as the name of the image.

So, the question now becomes "Should we just rely on keyword stuffing and hope that Google and the boys do not pick up on it"?

I personally believe that ethical developers should not have to resort to these sorts of tricks but then again, I cannot eat my ethics!

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

That page might have ranked higher because of a number of reasons. You shouldn't be looking at how many times a keyword appears but should be looking at the keyword density, the percentage of how many times a keyword appears relative to the total amount of words on the page, the optimum is thought to be 1 - 3%.

There are so many factors that can contribute so you really have to do your research, if you do your SEO properly then you should easily outrank the spammers and blackhatters.
