Would You Say Web Development is as Hard as Software Development?

I've been wondering this the past few days.

Would You Say Web Development is as Hard as Software Development?

Posted 18 February 2010 - 09:42 AM

Hello everyone!
Might be the wrong forum, move it if it is.

Lately, I have been working really hard on a social network site. I tried about a year ago and gave up due to lack of experience. Now, I have started again, I feel I have enough knowledge and experience under my belt to make this work now.
I am working in PHP and I love the language, there's something about it that I enjoy but I must say I am finding this difficult. I am having to write numerous classes and functions just to get the back end of the site working, I mean I have typed all of this code and there is nothing to show even still!

I expected it to be that way but it certainly has got me wondering.

A few years ago, I wanted to build an operating system, I was too young, too inexperienced - I thought I could just learn C++ and I would be on my way. But that was my enthusiasm.

Basically, would you say that web development e.g. big web applications such as Social Networking sites or such are as difficult to program/code as big software.

Just a thought.
Personally, I think it deserves just as much time and effort as Software Development.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

It depends entirely upon the complexity and size of the project. Effectively it's still programming either way so there's really no comparison, just which application the programming is put to.

no question desktop development is harder... only reason is that desktop has low level language like assembly, etc which are significantly harder than higher level languages which are usually what you find in a web environment. So overall, desktop development is way harder...

Not all desktop developers use assembly.

I've written C++, VB, COBOL, PHP, Javascript and found them about equally difficult.

It depends on the language you're using, the complexity of the project and the programmers knowledge.

I've never heard anyone say that VB was equally as hard to develop with as C++.

Personally I find that it depends on the project. Somethings are easier to do in desktop apps while some are easier in web design. I find that there is a lot more to desktop apps but websites can have an equal or greater level of complexity when compared to apps.

Usually in the end it comes down to how well designed something was to begin with.

It is all programming, just different platforms: desktop or web based. Being easy or hard depends on the developer, not the platform, and the choice of language. Some languages are better suited for different tasks.

I would also agree with carltech. If something is designed terribly, it will be a nightmare to implement it, whether it is desktop or web based. Bad is bad after all.

And now you have. I actually find it harder, tbh. I have a horrible, horrible time with visual languages. I've never understood why, it's just always been that way.

As someone who has done next to nothing in the way of web development, I can certainly say that the whole idea looks intimidating. However, I feel that if I were to take time to figure it out and sit down with something like Compojure for Clojure, the initial hurdle would be the worst part. Same as any other type of programming.

Depending on what you wish to do the difficulty will be either (to make it easy) low, normal or high.
Creating a simple hello world in HTML isn't hard at all, that is web-development as well. But if you
wish to create a social network like facebook it is a lot harder.

The same goes to software development. A hello world is a lot easier then a entire application like
Autodesk Maya 2010. As long as you has the knowledge everything is easy or normal in difficulty. Sure
there is always bugs in the first version of a big applications. But it often works anyway.

So I would say like many of the others here say.
It depends on the project.

it all depend on what project you will do. as much as every one hate VB i work on POS system for a clients on it and let me tell you there is nothing easy about it. not from programing part just from demands, wishes etc. that the clients wants.

A programs limitations are only limited to the programmers limitations. For me, I find Web Development more difficult because I know more about Desktop Development. Your resources, your knowledge and your willingness to learn is what will make a project more difficult to take on or whether you get half way and give up on it.

Writing HTML and CSS is easy. Writing PHP or some other server-side language is probably just as hard as developing for the desktop.

On the whole I would agree with what Lemur said, that it really depends on the complexity of the project but most times software development is usually harder.

It also depends on what you are trying to develop. Different applications have different complexities. Programming a social web network is a complex system compared to a simple desktop application or simple web application. As the complexity of an application increases, you need to increase your skills as a programmer to finish them. KYA has been known to say the following about learning to program, paraphrased, 1) Try and write a program. 2) Try and write a more complex program. 3) Go back to 2. So, trying to write a social network or an MMO for a desktop are unrealistic for say a beginner programmer. You have to keep expanding your knowledge and trying different things. Step outside of your comfort zone and try new things, you will grow as a programmer.
