Biggest project you've worked on alone.

Post icon  Posted 18 February 2010 - 11:42 PM

So I'll tell why I got to thinking about this kind of topic here later. But most of the stuff I work on is POS patches, and Remedy AR System Tools. Well apparently, Im doing a good job or no one else wanted to do this project. So Im wondering what is the biggest project yall have worked on whether it be for personal experience, for a client or whatever and how did you handle going about it.

Up until now, the biggest I've worked on was a team effort to patch some security holes in some of our machines. Took us 3 months working 10-12 hours a day in the office 6 days a week and then VNCing in for another 2-3 hours when we got home to collaborate on the progress.

Now, I've been asked to build a collaboration system kind of like a social networking/content management/wiki all in one from the ground up. Here are some of the main features they've thought of so far:
IM System
Wiki System
Dashboard application to interact with our Technicians
Video Conference and possibly Cisco MeetingPlace add-in

Keep in mind these are the only features they've though of so far. The next 3 weeks will be meetings deciding what is needed, whats wanted, etc. I get the pleasure of doing this by myself, it'll be a desktop and web based application. Apparently the MS Outlook and MSN Messenger system we use isnt up to date. So we need something proprietary. Yay!!!!

Oh yea, I get to work on this alone.
So what about yall?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 1

In my own time:
Software-wise, probably http://snippets.gabehabe.com
Web-wise, http://ohai.im

Both are fairly big projects. Both still have a lot of work to be done on them.

I do big projects at work quite often, usually alone. Biggest site I've done alone is a car registration site, searches through 30 million plates in a quarter of a second or something silly, and gives similar suggestions, etc. Complete with admin area, of course.

I was tasked with getting one of our pre-existing systems to work with a brand new proprietary device. I worked with the other company's firmware and board engineers. I had to write the software in managed C# code, but needed to wrap my communication layer because the USB libraries for the device were written in unmanaged C++ code.

A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into that project. I'm proud to say the two systems work great together, and am somewhat glad I had to work on each piece myself... it's those types of scenarios where you really gain a lot of experience.

Pressure builds diamonds! B)

Probably my Beer Pong Management System (Linked to DIC post, or my website). Its a C# .net 3.5 WinForm app. Its not too big right now, but my unreleased code I'm building an entire tournament system for it so its getting pretty big and complex

Im also working on 2 games on in flash and one in XNA, but those are huge and my partner in the those is bogged down atm so those have been put on hold

I don't believe I've worked on much of anything in a team environment... it's been pretty much all by my lonesome. I quite like it that way.

Thats awesome Core. I'm actually making a Student Attendance program right now for a High School. It keeps track of Student Tardies, Abscences, Lunch Count etc. Their secretary was overran with other work she was having a hard time getting around all over the school to collect the slips.

So I was contracted to build this, and they're thinking of expanding it to a whole School Management Suite to suit their needs. I've been wanting to start some Azure development so this may be a great oppurtunity to dive into that.

The idea behind mine was that the students should be able to study at home - they can get assignments, tests, personal messages. And of course, they get grades. The data is completely stored in the cloud, therefore the software is portable - once the teacher/student knows his/her ID and password, he/she can access the system from anywhere in the world without having to carry all the data.

If interested, you can take a look at it here:

Thats awesome. I had an idea for something like that when I took a Ecology via Arkansas Virtual High School. Sadly, I never got around to actually doing anything. Good luck with it.

This was a contest entry, but I am thinking of creating something similar with additional functionality and trying to test it in my local school (or maybe some other high school).

I wrote a 2d halo game in vb6. To make fun of a few of my friends who spent most of there after school hours playing.
