Just talked to a new client today, wants to setup a 20 hour p/month contract to perform preventive maintenance to 75-80 computers in their office. It'll be a nice chunk of change :)

Ooh Yeah! That's nice. I just found out with the client I'm developing for has 3 -4 clients who needs a CMS specifically like the one I have been making for awhile, so that is going to be a good chunk of change. Do people still talk about the recession? What recession? The IT field has been booming lately for 1099 contractors.

I don't want to say how much, because it's my proprietary software and I haven't officially set a price, but I can with confidence say it'll be in the 20k - 25k range per contract on top of our hourly contracts and start up money.

Lots of big projects.

The thing is, they tend to start out really nice and well though out, but as time goes on and you add more and more stuff you did not think of beforehand, things tend to become more and more messy.
So if you think of anything new that does not really blend in perfectly right away, take some time to make it fit, instead of patching it on with the code version of rubber-bands and chewing-gum.

Also, for things like the videoconferencing you mentioned: it already exists. Why not take a license on something and be done with it?

Like I said, they're wanting something built from the ground up. The meetings have started and trust me, if they want something that already exists and I can implement easily I bring it up. However I don't have the final say and I wont have the "final" design specs for another couple weeks at least. I say "final" because I have a feeling they will change their minds at least a dozen times a week.

An extremely annoying batch bomb (can I tell you guys about that one?)

I'm currently remaking ZORK using Python.

Those are nothing compared to the stuff you guys have mentioned but I gotta start somewhere, eh?

Yeah same here along with a poker game. Very simple stuff compared to what others are doing here, but it's big project for me now.

You have to start somewhere, my original 'big project' was highly embarrassing now that I look back at it.

My first project was a Japanese kana learning thing, it was very basic and involved hardcoded strings. The original had each symbol/meaning in a separate string *facepalm*

I found an older version. I almost threw up xD

It'd make the halls of horror. Easy.

rand = random number
if rand = 1
blah
blah
else if rand = 2
blah
blah
...
else if rand = 47
blah
blah
end if

Not quite so tasty :helpsmilie:
(This was before I discovered arrays)
:whistling:

At least now I use generic lists, and data in XML/Json files etc :sweatdrop:

I don't know if you could actually say I've been working on it much, but I have had ideas for a really small and basic search engine kind of similar to DuckDuckGo. I've also had thoughts of making a simple web game with PHP and MySQL, but I'm still learning the languages so those will be on hold for a while.

All I have is a layout for the index pages.

Mm, the danger with learning PHP is trying to learn it well.
I don't think I have (learned it, or learned it well :P ).

MySQL also can be tricky to learn well, too.
Good luck mate!
