Google Summer of Code

Post icon  Posted 18 February 2010 - 11:56 PM

Hey guys, so I was thinking about applying for the GSOC this year and wonder if anyone has any thoughts or if anyone here has participated in it before and how they saw it as a whole afterwards.

I figure that it'd be something good to do, seeing as it would be a good thing to put in as experience for a resume or something...and since I'm always bored over the summer anyway. :)

Edit: I stumbled upon the idea because of my dad telling me about how he stumbled on a game that's in development and the game is a mentor for GSOC. He told me about it and I've been thinking about it for a bit now...

I personally haven't tried it, but I've heard nothing but great things about it, I've been thinking of doing it as well, but I'm so busy it's hard to find time to do it.

It looks like a great way to build up experience and collaborate with a team, but I believe you need to be over 18, so I can't enter for a few years :(

I'd like to do it, but I'm not sure I know enough programming to do it.

The required skills really depend from project to project. If you are willing to do some effort, you can probably get in knowing only the basics of programming, and still succeed.

Anyway, I was a student for Wikimedia Foundation last year, and can really recommend GSoC as an opportunity where you can learn, get involved in communities, and get to know awesome people. I can really recommend WMF as mentoring organization, check out this page if you're interested in applying there :)

Yeah, it sounds like something that would be totally worthwhile. But I'm always worried that I'm going to be in over my head. -_-

After seeing this topic (and having never heard of gsoc before), I checked out a few webpages about it and it looks pretty interesting. Does anyone know what the story is about applying? I mean, do you have to be familiar with organisations beforehand... and do the organisations need to be familiar with you beforehand? Is there any way to find out what organisations will be participating, and then apply to them? It seems all questions were answered on Google's FAQ except that.

I'm a 2nd year Computer Science student btw, and had no experience programming before College. But no harm in checking it out and sending in a few applications (to whoever it is you apply to!) anyway.
